Last-lap heroics earn ARMS honors for Wolff’s ARMI

Tyler Wolff won the USRA Modified main event.

Tyler Wolff won the USRA Modified main event.

Tyler Wolff got a bit of redemption Saturday as the 39-year-old racer from Fayetteville, Ark., bounced back from a near miss the previous night to top the 25-lap main event for American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports at the Tri-State Speedway.

Driving the No. 4W MBCustoms Modified powered ECE Racing Engines and sponsored by ARMI Contractors, Wolff led the majority of Friday’s feature at the Arrowhead Speedway only to give up the lead and win to Chad Wheeler with eight laps to go.

Twenty-four hours later, Wolff chased polesitter Jason Hughes from start to finish and made his winning move as the duo crossed beneath the white flag side by side.

After trading several slide-jobs during the final orbit, Wolff ducked underneath Hughes exiting the final corner and beat the local legend to the finish line by a bumper (63 one-hundredths of a second to be exact).

“I’ll be honest with you, last night we were a sitting duck with Chad, so it was kind of nice to be in that cat bird seat and see what Jason had going on,” Wolff said in victory lane. “He got tight down there, so I knew that was my chance to pounce. I was just trying to make sure it was a good clean finish.

While Wolff pocketed the $2,000 winner’s share of the prize money after starting eighth on the grid, Hughes had to settle for second place.

“Man, I drove the wheels off that thing,” Wolff added. “! didn't know if that wall was going to hold me up or not. Jason is one of the best around… I consider him top notch so if you can beat him—especially coming to the checkered—you’ve done something.”

The only down side to the fantastic battle up front between Wolff and Hughes was paying attention to all of the action happening around the entire high-banked 3/8-mile red clay oval.

Terry Phillips was a solid third-place finisher while Joe Duvall earned a $100 bonus and the Dickson Transport Hard Charger Award for finishing fourth after starting 14th.

Kale Westover wound up fifth, Jared Russell, Gary Christian, Wheeler, Mike Hansen and Trevor Hughes—who started on the front row next to his father—rounded out the top 10.

In other Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action on Saturday, Cody King captured the USRA B-Mod main event while the Sunoco USRA Factory Stock feature went to Wesley Bourne.

The American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports will be on hiatus until Saturday, July 22, when the series makes its maiden voyage to the Salina Highbanks Speedway near Pryor Lake, Okla.
