Williams wires American Racer USRA Modified Series field in Texarkana

A solid field of 36 USRA Modifieds made their way to the 67 Speedway on Friday night and produced a first-time winner for the American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports in their first visit to the 1/4-mile dirt oval in Texarkana, Ark.

Racing at his “home track” located 25 miles from Fouke, Ark., Manuel Williams II garnered the pole position for a second straight night after repeating the feat from Thursday at the Hunt County Raceway in Greenville, Texas.

After leading three laps early on, he eventually settled for a fourth-place finish Thursday but Friday was a different animal as the second-generation racer never relinquished the top spot en route to a $2,500 pay day and his first ARMS triumph.

“It was definitely a tricky racetrack,” the 33-year-old said. “We had a pretty good hot rod but it was definitely a hard racetrack to get around. Man, we’ve been traveling up and down the road trying to win one of these things for about two years this sure does feel good to finally get one.

“We’ve been racing here since I started racing 15 or 18 years ago—forever. We’ve been racing with ARMS and USMTS a long time now and we haven’t been able to pick one up, but I told my dad if we kept going we’d finally picked one up, there here it is.”

The win did not come easy, however, as his No. 24 MB Customs powered by Baldwin Racing Engines was chased throughout the feature race by Gary Christian, Tanner Mullens and Thursday’s winner, Rodney Sanders as they tried high and low to no avail.

Christian switched to the high line with two laps remaining and that left the door open for Sanders to steal the runner-up honors while Townsend and tenth-starting Tommy Cannon completed the top five.

D.J. Shannon, Kale Westover, Mark Smith and Tanner Barnhart were sixth through ninth, respectively, while Lynnsee Provence came from 17th on the starting grid to finish tenth and garner the Dickson Transport Hard Charger Award.

In other action Friday night, Aaron Roy scored $500 for his win in the USRA Limited Mod feature while fellow Texarkana racer Justin Whitehead held off 13th-starting Scott Hushelpeck for a Sunoco USRA Factory Stock win worth $500.

The USRA Tuner nightcap saw 12-year-old Clay Gardner of Stamps take the feature win in dominating fashion to pocket $200.

Eyes on the prize at Mize: Two more events remain this Labor Day Weekend with the third round of action happening Saturday, Sept. 2, at Kevin Sustaire’s rip-roaring Rocket Raceway Park in Petty, Texas, for the 9th Annual Bryan Mize Memorial.

Expected to draw some of the nation’s top talent, the race pays $9,000 to the winner and attracts many of the nation’s best dirt modified monsters.

The four-race weekend wraps up Sunday at the RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, for the Ronnie Sigman Memorial which carries a $4,800 top prize for the feature winner at the always-tight and always-thrilling 1/4-mile bullring.

The season finale happens Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28, at the Rocket Raceway Park for the ARMS Nationals.
