Southern New Mexico Speedway to help victims of deadly tornados


LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- After the devastating tornados that ripped apart the southern United States, the Southern New Mexico Speedway in association with area high schools and Cowboys for Cancer Research looks to bring light to those who have may find themselves in their darkest days.

Admission to the Speedway is normally $10, but on Saturday, May 14, anybody who brings a case of water or other non-perishable item by the case to the races will be rewarded with half-price admission.

Besides water, other items that are desperately needed include diapers, wipes, formula, prepaid cell phones and gift cards to Wal-mart, Target and Lowes. Instead of water being a box of Gatorade packets that can be mixed with water, any hygiene items, canned goods by the case, heavy duty trash bags, five-gallon buckets, mops, brooms, heavy gloves, tarps, rain ponchos, etc.

The goal is to fill a 53-foot-long trailer which will be sent free of charge thanks to the Southern New Mexico Speedway and Mesilla Valley Transportation. MVT will be hauling a load of food and beverage or whatever people donate to Alabama at no charge.

They will also be asking which high school you support this weekend when you donate. The Las Cruces high school that donates the most will get $500 donated to Cowboys for Cancer Research in their name.

On Saturday, May 14, the gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with racing beginning at 7:45. Regular admission is $10 or $5 with donation. Seniors, military, law enforcement, kids ages 11-15 and university students with i.d. get in for $7 and children 10 and under get in for free.

Featured this Saturday night will be the Renegade Sprint Car Series, Rick's Performance Center Street Stocks, USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods (X-Mods) and Sisbarro Super Trucks.

The Southern New Mexico Speedway is located 11 miles west of Las Cruces at the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Take exit 132 off I-10 to Robert Larson Blvd. then head west to the Speedway.
