Barnett victorious at Southern New Mexico Speedway

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- A night of giving as cases of water, food and toiletry items poured into the Southern New Mexico Speedway to help the victims of tornados in Alabama. Rewarded with half price admission, the fans were treated to the USRA Western Flyer HotMods plus three other classes.

The USRA Western Flyer HotMods kicked off the night’s main events with 25 laps on the scoreboard and Ralph Adams Jr. jumping into the race lead. Working three wide, Donovan Flores worked by Sherman Barnett as the two racers split cars on their way to second and third on the track with Barnett able to get back by Flores.

Running into slower traffic, Adams tried everything to hold of Barnett but Barnett had the set up and the run as he took the race lead, leaving Adams to battle with Flores as the caution waved. Back to green with 12 laps to run with Flores and Adams again going at it for the runner-up spot with Flores taking the position.

On the move, Dustin Smith worked into fifth after restarting seventh, setting his sights on fourth-running Alex Gonzales before the caution waved for Israel Ortega. To the green only to see the caution wave yet again with eight laps to run as Steven Villegas plowed the retaining wall, taking Austin Adams with him as he shot down the track. Locked together, both cars were pulled into the infield as the race resumed, minus five laps due to time.

So with three laps to run, Barnett continued to lead with Flores and Smith restarting right on his back bumper. Fighting back into third, Ralph Adams Jr. pulled the slide job only to allow Smith to fight back before the caution waved for Phil Locke due to mechanical failure.

Green-white-checkered as the field got back to racing with Barnett able to run away for the win. Flores, Smith, Alex Gonzales and Ralph Adams Jr. rounded out the top-5.
