Tipton “tiptoes” to huge USRA RHS Modified win at Southern New Mexico Speedway

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- It may have been the end of the world somewhere Saturday, but there were no zombies stalking or rapture raining down – only mud flying at the Southern New Mexico Speedway as the USRA RHS Modifieds headlined the night's racing action.

In the main event, Chris Sims set the pace to the green only to see yellow as Greg Gorham spun to a stop, forcing a complete restart. Take two and Sims got the jump but it was second-starting Terry Tipton leading on lap 1.

Battling for third, Sherman Barnett made contact with Mercedes Harris and Dickie Gorham with the field staying green and Barnett losing several positions. On the move, Jacob Gallardo worked from 14th to battle for a spot in the top five with Christy Georges, Royal Jones and Holly Jones.

Back up front, Tom Georges, who took advantage of a crossed-up Barnett earlier in the race, took away second from Sims with the race just past the halfway point. Back in the thick of the field, Gallardo fought past Georges and Jones to fight with Sims to take over third.

With 10 laps to run, the battle for fifth continued to be a good one. Running down fourth-running Dickie Gorham, Christy Georges rounded out the top five as the fight for second went to Gallardo. Less than ten circuits and Tipton was in a field all his own, running over a straight-away ahead of the Gallardo.

To eight laps left, Royal Jones and Christy Georges fought hard for fourth. Side by side, Jones pulled off the slide job to take over fourth as the field came up on the white flag.

Lapping up to tenth on the 21-car field, Tipton took the win in dominating fashion. Gallardo, Tom Georges, Royal Jones and Christy Georges rounded out the top five.

Up next at the Southern New Mexico Speedway, the USRA Western Flyer HotMods (X-Mods) return to do battle on Saturday, May 28, along with the Renegade Sprint Car Series, Rick's Performance Center Street Stocks and Legends Cars.

On Saturday May 28, gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 7:45. Admission is only $10 with children ages 11-15, members of the military, seniors, law enforcement personnel and students with university i.d. getting in for $7. Kids 10 and under are free.
