CRESCO, Iowa (May 5, 2002) - The Howard County Fair Board sponsored opening night of the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa. The Modifieds were first on the new and improved race track with heat wins going to Darin Duffy and Dan Bohr. The Hobbys came out next with Kevin Donlan, Jason Schlagen, and Steve Holthaus picking up the heat wins.

Scott Bauer, Brian Tank, and Marinus Mlady rounded out the heat winners in the Stock Car division. New to the track at Cresco is the Cash Dash. The top two or three drivers from each class qualify for this dash for money. Winning the Cash Dash in the Modified was Darin Duffy.

Tory Reicks picked up the win in the Hobby, and the Stock Car winner was Mike Bergan. The first feature race on the track was the Hornet division. Johnny Honda took the lead in the middle of this race and held on to win the first feature race of the 2002 season. Scott Spilde, Randy Koshatka, and Steve Dwyer rounded out the top four.

Next to the track were the Factory Stocks. In this caution free race, Lee Nuehring took the checkered flag, followed by Dustin Panos, Dave Lickteig, and Bob Malli.

Darin Duffy started outside pole in the Modified feature race and led all laps, holding off a tough Troy Langowski and Kerry Ledebuhr, to take the checkered flag. On a restart with two laps left, Lagowski went high, lost position, and finished in fourth. Ledebuhr picked up second and Mike Mehling took third.

The Hobbys were the next to take the track. Tory Reicks was leading the pack at the half way point and continued to pull away from the pack.

Reicks crossed the checkered flags first, a fourth of a track in front of the second place car.

After, Reicks dropped two positions for jumping on a green flag and finished in third, which gave Tim Gebel the feature win. Kevin Donlan finished second, followed by Reicks and Jeremy Moellers.

There was a battle for the lead throughout the entire Stock Car feature between Scott Bauer, Jeff Schluetter, Ron Konkel, and Lynn Panos.

Bauer took the checkered flag by a bumper in front of Schluetter, followed by Konkel and Panos.
