Carney victorious at Southern New Mexico Speedway

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Memorial Day Weekend at the Southern New Mexico Speedway saw the Renegade Sprint Car Series headline the night's racing action presented by Border International Truck Sales. Joining the RSCS wwere the USRA Western Flyer HotMods (X-Mods), Legends Cars and Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks.

The USRA Western Flyer HotMods kicked off the "A" Main on Border International Truck Sales Night at the Southern New Mexico Speedway with Gregory Gorham taking the lead from the outside of the front row as polesitter Josh Gallardo saw his night end early after contact with another car.

Lined up for the restart with one lap in and 24 to run, Tom Connor bolted into the race lead before the field slowed again as cars piled up on the exit of turn 2. On the restart, Rob Madrid had already worked into second after starting ninth and was looking for the lead with 12th-starting Patrick Carney stalking him in third.

Starting to reel in Connor, Madrid challenged for the lead but had his hands full as Carney ran down the battle for the top spot, stealing away second and setting his sights on Connor before the caution waved.

With 15 laps left to run, Connor had his hands full as Carney worked the slide job to steal the top spot before Connor battled back in a big way, diving to the bottom of the track to reclaim the lead. Side by side with 10 laps to run, neither driver would give an inch as the advantage was to Connor.

Racing into slower traffic, Carney used slower cars to his advantage with seven laps to run, pulling alongside Connor and completing a textbook slide job for the top spot with five laps to run.

Running in third from the 16th starting spot, Sherman Barnett went to work on Connor as Carney cruised to the win.

Connor, Barnett, Madrid and Todd Harper rounded out the top five.
