Ihm “aces” Cresco Late Model Invitational

by Amber Cimmiyotti

CRESCO, Iowa (June 26, 2002) - Budweiser sponsored tonight's races at the Howard County Fair. Tonight's racing action included the Late Model Invitational and the NEI Mod Tour, along with Hobby Stock and Hornets.

Racing action got under way first with the Hornet heats. Heat winners were Matt Beck and Jonny Severtson. Winners of the Hobby Stock heats were Jeremy Moellers, Kevin Donlan, Steve Holthaus, and Darrin Walch.

Modifieds were on the track next with heat wins going to Jon Passick, Dan Bohr, Chuck Stanton, and Darin Duffy. Late Models took to the track for the first time this season with wins going to Darin Burco, Ace Ihm, and Curt Martin.

The only Cash Dash of the night was in the Hobby Stock. Darrin Walch picked up the win, and also accepted Gordy's A Challenge.

The Hobby Stock consolation was next with Travis Schissel picking up the win. Taking the checkered in the Modified consolation was Jason Snyder.

Jonny Severtson was looking for his second feature win at the Cresco track and took the lead in the Hornet feature on lap 3. Scott Kronn was also on the move in his car and passed Severtson in the 3rd corner on the last lap to take the win. Severtson finished second, followed by Garry Gulrud and Randy Koshatka.

Darrin Walch took Gordy's A Challange in the Hobby Stock feature, which started him at the back of the pack. If he could win the feature tonight, he would have an extra $200 in his paycheck. Walch was definately moving, but ended up in fifth. Both Kevin Donlan and Dan Christopher battled hard for the lead, but Donlan had it when the checkered flags waved. Christopher came in second, followed by Steve Holthaus and Jeremy Moellers.

After finished 17th last week, Darin Duffy was looking for the win in the Modified feature. Jamie Aikey started on the front row and held the top spot until Duffy passed him on lap 14. Once Duffy took the lead, there was no looking back as he pulled away from the field to take the checkered, followed by Aikey. Meanwhile, there was a tight battle for third between Chuck Stanton and Larry Schmidt. Stanton finished in third, followed by Schmidt.

It was great to see the Late Models on the track again, and they were definately a sight to see in tonight's feature race. Ace Ihm may have started in the pole position, but he had a tough battle to keep that number one spot. Curt Martin was on his tail and as the two of them pulled away from the rest of the pack, they continued to battle. As the green flag waved, signaling two laps remained, Greg Kastli came on strong and made it a battle for the end. Ihm came away in first, followed by Martin, Kastli, and Luke Merfeld.

Join us on Thursday night for another fair special as K&T Automotive & Machine sponsor the night's races, featuring the United States Modified Touring Series, along with Factory Stock and Stock Car. Hot laps start at 7:00 with racing immediately following.
