Hovden, Johansen emerge with Iron Man Challenge wins at Worthington

WORTHINGTON, Minn. -- The Iron Man Challenge featuring the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods made its fourth stop of the season Sunday night at the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn., with two new winners emerging.

In the Stock Cars, Mitch Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, became the fourth different winner in as many races while the third show for the B-Mods produced a third different winner with Nick Johansen of Russell, Minn., taking the checkered flag.

Hovden, who captured the 2007 USRA Hobby Stock National Championship and was runner-up in the final Stock Car rankings in 2009, raced to the front from the sixth starting position, and then survived a rough-and-tumble main event to take home the $700 top prize.

Fellow Decorah driver Kyle Falck passed twelve cars en route to finishing second while Jeff Joldersma was third, Justin Temeyer fourth and Steve Jackson fifth from the 20th starting spot.

Sixth through tenth were Todd Staley, 25th-starting Luke Saathoff, defending USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car National Champion Reich Gregoire, Jim Larson and Randy Johnson.

Defending Iron Man Challenge titleist Nathan Wood fell victim to an incident and wound up deep in the final finishing order, but managed to maintain the points lead heading into the next event.

In the B-Mod main event, Nick Johansen of Russell, Minn., garnered the $500 top prize with a victory over a strong field of drivers.

Steve Bents came from 11th on the 24-car starting grid to capture the runner-up paycheck while Iron Man Challenge points leader Matt Lettow wound up third ahead of defending USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod National Champion Brandon Hare.

Brian Schrage was fifth, Brady Joynt secured the sixth spot, seventh went to Jason Fisher, Tyler Johnson ended up eighth, Dan Ahlers nabbed the ninth spot and 14-year-old Parker Hale rounded out the top ten finishers.

The action heads to the Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa, tomorrow night with $700 to win the Stock Car main event and $500 for the B-Mod feature winner. In last year’s Stock Car finale at the half-mile semi-banked dirt oval, Mark Elliott became the series’ fourth different winner in four races with a thrilling finish at the Fort Dodge oval.
