Logan gets first IRA win at Cresco

CRESCO, Iowa (Sept. 1, 2002) - It was a great night of racing at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa on Sunday night. The Labor Day weekend racing action featured the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Tour plus Hobby Stock and Stock Cars.

First to the track were the Sprint Car time trials. The current record was set Labor Day weekend of last year, with a time of 13.862. Sprint Cars already raced at the track this May, but no car was able to pick up a new record, and that was the goal tonight. Two cars actually beat the old record, and the new track record now belongs to Travis Whitney with a lap time of 13.6, which averages out to 105 mph.

Following the time trials were the Stock Car heat races. Picking up wins were Lynn Panos and Rick Stockman. Sprint Cars were on the track once again for their heat races, but the IMA racing officials have all the information for their heat and consolation races. The Hobby Stocks were next on the track with heat wins going to Jason Rohde, Tory Reicks, and Patty Fosaaen.

Races were rushed along throughout the night as it looked like we were about to get rained on. The first A feature of the night were the Stock Cars. Kevin Bidne started on the pole position and held it all the way to the checkered flag. Tom Schmidt took away second from Jeff Schluetter, who finished third. Marinus Mlady and Gerald Peters were battling for the number four position, but a nice move by Lynn Panos took him by both of them to pick up fourth.

Sprint Cars were next on the track in an "international race", featuring two cars from Australia and one from Canada. Once again, it looked like the pole position was the spot to have, as Ricky Logan started in that top position and held onto it until the checkered flags flew. It was definately a significant win for Logan, as it was his first IRA feature win in about a year. The cars behind Logan continued to battle to the end with the 82 car coming in second, followed by Skip Jackson and Steve Meyer.

The Hobby Stock feature was next on the track, as the final race of the 2002 racing season. Tory Reicks started in the fifth position but took over the lead on the first lap. Steve Holthaus quickly took the second spot and was looking for any kind of an opportunity to pass Reicks. Meanwhile, Mike Jones, Jason Rohde, and Jimmy Broszeit were battling for the third position. It looked like Reicks was going to come away with the win, but coming out of corner four on the last lap, Holthaus went way down low and squeezed by Reicks to pick up the win by inches. Reicks followed behind in second, Jones picked up third, and fourth went to Rohde.

Thank you to all for a great racing season and hope to see you at the Speedway Awards Banquet on November 2 at the Expo Center on the fairgrounds. Hope to see you then.
