Davis, Kath score “Mascot Night” wins at Deer Creek Speedway

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- The second annual Mascot Night at Deer Creek Speedway was a hit with $675 raised for each school that had their mascot on hand for the evening’s activities with $6,166 total raised for the schools through a silent auction.

Cash donations from the following people and businesses were also raised: North Country Equipment, Steve Yaggy Specialized Truck Service, Eagles Club of Rochester, Sunshine Sanitation, Clement Farms, LRM Realty, Essig Agency, Baudoin Oil,  Hanson Tire Service, Funk Trucking, Schroeder Trucking, Dougan Farms, Gerdees Farms, Olympic Fire & Protection and John Diercks.

Silent auction items were donated by Pepsi, Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Steve Arpin, Steve Yaggy, Iowa Speedway, NAPA Auto Parts, Deer Creek Speedway, Featherlite and the Minnesota Vikings.

A huge thanks to everyone who participated and a special thanks to Viktor and the Minnesota Vikings for having Viktor on hand for the kids club activities and throughout the nights racing action.

As the racing action was set to hit the speedway it was announced that our anonymous donor had stepped up to make the USRA RHS Modified feature pay $1,000 to win with the bonus program.  Shortly thereafter, Randy and Patty Eastvold of Hanson Tire Service in LeRoy added $100 to each of the feature winner checks on the night.  The drivers really appreciate the efforts of these fine folks who are willing to add a little bonus throughout the racing season.

First up on the card for the feature action were the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods with two- and three-wide battles up front out of turn 2.  Billy Steinberg took the lead with Brandon Hare quickly moving into second.  Kylie Kath and Erik Kanz raced side by side for third as the caution flew on lap 2.

On the restart, Steinberg led with eight cars getting collected in an accident out of turn 2 and bringing out another restart.  This time Steinberg and Hare raced for the lead.  Hare led lap 3 as another caution flew.  Another quick caution on lap 4 settled the field down a little as they were led to the green in single file formation.

Hare led with Kath in second.  Steinberg and Jake Timm raced for third.  Kath started to pressure Hare up front while a tight pack raced for fourth.  Seven laps down and Timm gained on the leaders as they continued to battle for the top spot.  Behind Timm, Ben Anderson moved into fourth with Shaun Walski in fifth.

Timm caught the leaders on lap 9 as they went three wide for the lead.  Kath took control of the lead on lap 12 as the final caution of the event flew.  On the restart, Kath led with Timm into second.  Anderson slid under Hare to take away third as they came out of turn 4 for the checkers.  Walski rounded out the top 5.

Jacob Bleess, Mike Jaeger and Kath took home the wins in the earlier heat race action.

The final race of the night saw Brandon Davis leading the USRA RHS Modifieds with Josh Angst in second.  Brad Waits quickly worked into third and on lap 3 and moved past Angst for second.  Jason Cummins worked into fourth while Nate Wasmund and Mike Sorensen raced for fifth.

Cummins moved into third and started to gain on Waits in second.  With seven down Angst, Waits and Cummins had a great battle going for second.  Waits took over second on lap 10, leaving Angst and Cummins to race for third.  Cummins took the spot and started to gain on Waits.

With 14 laps down Cummins was alongside Waits for second.  Bob Timm moved into fifth and started to pressure Wasmund for fourth.  As the laps wound down, Cummins put heavy pressure on Davis up front until there was five to go and then Davis started to open up a gap over Cummins.

At the finish it was Davis, Cummins, Waits, Wasmund and Timm in the top 5.

Tim Donlinger, Kurt Krauskopf, Davis and Timm won the four heat races while Keith Foss won the "B" Feature.

Racing action resumes next week on Wednesday, July 27, with the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service and runs through Saturday, July 30. The USMTS Modifieds will be racing for $20,000 to win.
