Tipton takes Southern New Mexico Speedway checkers

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Four classes with 84 cars filled the pits of the Southern New Mexico Speedway Saturday night with the USRA RHS Modifieds headlining the night's racing action.

Dusty Riggs led the way at the drop of the green in the 30-lap main event. Shooting to second from fourth, Terry Tipton stalked Riggs while Jacob Gallardo dove to the low line to take a shot at Tipton for the runner-up spot. Wheel to wheel, Tipton would held the spot as the battle for third was a family affair with Fito Gallardo going after his son Jacob.

Separating from the field, the top four started to approach slower traffic with Tipton still working all over the back bumper of Riggs for the race lead. Running back down the fight of the lead, Jacob Gallardo ran a car width off the bottom of the race track, pulling to the inside of Tipton as he pulled even with Riggs for the race lead.

Three wide for the top spot, Tipton carried a full head of steam into turns 3-4. Sliding up and slamming the door Tipton stole the lead as the caution waved a lap later for Donovan Ooley. Ten laps complete as the field roared back to life, the fight for second was on with Jacob Gallardo taking it away as he and Bumper Jones both went after Riggs for third.

Making their way by, Fito Gallardo went to work on Jacob while Jacob went after Tipton for the lead. Racing to 13 laps to go, slower traffic was the teller of tales as Tipton dove low, leaving the high line wide open for Jacob Gallardo to take over the lead as the caution waved for Fito. Losing an engine while running third, Fito's Modiifed came to a rest on the back access road just down from turn 3.

Back to green with nine laps to, the fight for second saw Jones take to the inside line for the slide job but Tipton would turn down the track to take second back. With Gallardo leading, he overshot the high line in the closing laps and handed the lead back to Tipton. Battling for second, Jones took it with less than five laps to go, leaving Gallardo to battle with Stormy Scott as the laps clicked by.

Tipton took the win, followed by Jones, Gallardo, Scott and Riggs.

Modified heat wins belonged to Jacob Gallardo, Holly Jones, Mercedes Harris and Bumper Jones.
