Black, Solander top opening night thrillers at 81 Speedway

A field of 125 race cars checked in for the season opneer at the 81 Speedway.

From the start, the Kansas Tow Company USRA B-Mod feature looked like Tyler Kidwell was on his way to double down with a strong early lead after winning Friday at tyhe Humboldt Speedway.

In fact, he was able to fend off challenge after challenge until the white flag lap when Reece Solander drove around the outside of the Kidwell on entry of turn 3 and crossed the stripe just 0.144 seconds ahead of Kidwell in amazing fashion.

Finishing third was Clint McFadden, fourth went to Cory Janesek and Slade Mohr rounded out the top five.

In the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modifieds., the former family house car piloted by Dan Powers started from the pole while Brendon Gemmill was alongside.

At the start, Gemmill showed his high side presence bolting to an early lead. But with many big names like USMTS platinum driver Brandon Givens, the always-fast Paden Phillips, former champions like Brian Franz , Ryan McAninch and Tad Davis with new racers like Wyatt Gaggero and Tanner Black it was anyone’s race.

Gemmill went on to lead 12 laps when Tanner Black snuck by for the top spot. Gemmill kept pace, and after a couple cautions was lined up single-file behind Black for a green-white-checkered finish.

At the drop of the green it appeared the Gemmill fanned out but Black refused to give up the high line making Gemmill decide to lift or not to lift. The result was Gemmill in the wall in turns 1-2, so Black came home with the victory.

Gaggero fought hard all night to be runner up, Tad Davis third, Powers fourth and fifth ended up being Henry Chambers.

We first need to thank all of the brave fans that came to support our favorite sport of dirt track racing. We appreciate all of the race teams and supporters that came out. Until next time, see ya at the races.
