Hoeft claims Scott Johnson Memorial victory

BRITT, Iowa (July 12, 2002) - An open pole position signified more than words could explain on Friday evening at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt as 25 stock cars came out to honor one of their own for the Scott Johnson Memorial. Johnson passes away suddenly in December.

In a nightcap that started off in a flurry of yellows, the Stock car feature got underway with Travis Hoeft of Forest City maneuvering his way into the top spot on lap six until the checkered.

Along with the regular purse, Hoeft received $100 from Jim and Sue Ricke of Midwest Off-Road Racing of Fort Dodge. The Rickes also put down $50 each for second and third places claimed by Jeff Dolphin of Forest City and Joe Paulin of Dayton.

Russ and Judy Johnson, parents of Scott also presented Hoeft with an extra $100 for winning the memorial event while Mark and Shauna Elliott and Brent Hummel presented Hoeft with $100 for leading the twelfth lap, Scott Johnson's car was number 12.

Mark Elliott and Scott Johnson built their first Stock Car together numbering it 12. When the two decided to both race, Johnson added the "J". That "J" was remembered on Friday as the entire Johnson family presented brothers Mark and Greg Elliott plaques on the finish line for their continued support.

In the Limited 360 Modified class, Shawn Plymesser of Forest City claimed his first feature win of 2002 at the Hancock County Speedway. Plymesser jumped out to an early lead in the first lap after starting in the third row inside. Todd Hanson of Clear Lake and Scott Manske of Algona were each knocking on his door, but Plymesser held off for the victory and a celebration in victory lane before accepting his trophy on the front stretch.

Earl Webner of Garner claimed another feature win in the IMCA Hobby Stock class holding off John Madson of Britt and Shane Monson of Clear Lake. Top points contenders vied for the top spot in the IMCA Modified feature with Pat Graham of LeMars winning the crown after leading 18 laps. Scott Olson of Ellsworth didn't let Graham win easy as he tried to take Graham on the high side, lap for lap until the checkered was thrown. Brad Bakken of Garner finished third.

In the Econo Stock feature, Cory Gansen of Clear Lake picked up another feature win followed by Harry Armstrong of Fort Dodge and Cory Roe of Webster City.
