Briggs bags North Central Arkansas Speedway USRA Modified win

FLIPPIN, Ark. -- Nearly ideal conditions greeted the fans and drivers who turned out for another exciting Saturday night of racing at North Central Arkansas Speedway.

Kandy Methvin and Jason Snodgrass paced the field to the green flag at the start of the USRA Modified feature race, and Snodgrass had the advantage on the field heading into turn 1 with cars stacked up three-wide behind him. John Briggs shot to the bottom of the track heading into turn one and used the bottom of the track in turns three and four to pull out in front for the lap one lead, followed across the stripe by Kandy Methvin in second and with Snodgrass clinging to third.

As the field continued to shuffle for position behind Briggs on lap two, a three-car incident in turn four brought out the first caution period of the event, bunching the field for the following restart. Only a single lap would be completed before a spin in turn two by Steve Muilenburg would again close up the pack and change the running order.

An aborted restart for a spinning Rob Muilenburg kept the field packed tight as it reset and the running order on the next completed lap showed Ray Flippin up in the second spot behind Briggs with Methvin and Marvin Forrest doing battle for fourth. As the racing progressed through the middle portion of the event, Forrest was able to get past both Methvin and Flippin by lap six to take over second and attempt to chase down the leader Briggs.

Steve Muilenburg moved back up through the field and used the cushion to get past Flippin for fourth by lap twelve. With Forrest closing to the back bumper of Briggs out in front and looking inside to try to take over the lead, Steve and Methvin raced side-by-side for third. The final caution flag of the night waved on lap fifteen for Rob as a flat tire brought him to a stop on the track and set up a five-lap shootout between Briggs and Forrest for the win.

As the green flag waved to resume the race Briggs pulled away slightly from Forrest, but Forrest slowly reeled Briggs back in, pulling almost alongside Briggs twice in an attempt to grab the lead on the inside. Briggs cut hard to the bottom of the track entering turn one of the white flag lap, and the break in momentum by Forrest was all Briggs needed to drive to his first Modified feature win of the year.
