Muilenburg takes two on opening night at North Central Arkansas Speedway
YELLVILLE, Ark. -- The North Central Arkansas Speedway kicked off the 2013 race season Friday night under clear skies, and the fans on hand were treated to some exciting action on this brisk spring evening.
The newly-sanctioned USRA B-Mod division led off the feature racing, setting the tone for the night as it went into the books as the first of three feature races that ran caution-free on the evening.
Steve Muilenburg held the pole position with Terry Phillips sitting outside the front row as the field took the green flag, and Muilenburg picked up right where he left off last season as he quickly pulled away from the field.
After starting fifth on the field, Kandy Methvin drove up to the third spot on lap 3 as he got around Tony Myers on the high side of the track.
Methvin next moved past Phillips to take over second on lap four and tried to run down the leader, but Muilenburg had too large of an advantage for Methvin to overcome.
The USRA Modified feature saw Muilenburg sitting on his second pole position for the night, with results that mirrored his earlier efforts.
Mike Maggard started outside the front row and stayed close to the leader over the early laps but Muilenburg soon began to outdistance the field.
Jason Snodgrass and Mike Smith battled almost all race with the two drivers battling hard for several laps with Snodgrass nearly getting past Smith numerous times before taking over third for good on lap 12.
Smith brought out the first yellow flag in the feature races just two laps later as his right rear tire expired entering turn 3 on lap 14.
The restart had Muilenburg quickly pulling away from Maggard to take his second feature win of the evening with Maggard finishing second and Snodgrass claiming third.
