Heavy rain cuts short Chateau Raceway again

LANSING, Minn. -- Early afternoon thunderstorms grazed the Austin area and the race program at the Chateau Raceway was on at least for a little while. A busy night was on tap as the first order of business was three make-up features that were rained out the previous Friday night. A late-arriving crowd came out for Radio Link Internet night at the races.

Storm clouds were gathering to the west when the L&D Ag USRA B-Mods took to the track for their 15-lap “A” Main. Polesitter Dustin Sorensen led Jerry Young at the start while the pack went four wide for fourth.

Sorensen slid up the track and Young shot by, but then Young’s car slowed and Sorensen was back on top.

Kylie Kath moved through traffic and quickly challenged Sorensen for the lead, taking the spot on lap 5 until a yellow stopped the race on lap 9. On the restart, Sorensen’s car didn’t get up to speed and Dan Wheeler, Scott Demmer and Josh Mattick were three-abreast for second.

The race was then stopped several times for assorted spins and stoppages. Demmer and Mattick raced for second until they tangled on lap 11 to trigger the final caution.

The final four laps were cut to a green-white-checkered finish. Kath held on for his second win of the season with Wheeler second. Demmer finished in third with Young in fourth and Max Anderson fifth.

The skies were black to the southwest of the track and the intense storm hit quick with sheets of rain, wind and heavy lightning shortly thereafter. That put an end to the program as the fans and participants ran for cover.

Ticket stubs and pit wristbands from this week’s rain-out will be honored for next Friday, June 7. Weather permitting, it will be a busy week at Chateau Raceway. On Thursday, June 6, the Iron Man Challenge for USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Modss will run a full show along with the USMTS Modifieds that will run their “B” Mains and “A” Main that was rained out on May 24. Then on Friday, there will be a full show of weekly points racing.
