CRESCO, Iowa -- Tom Schmitt and Corey Crapser each took a big step toward their Iron Man Challenge title hopes as each took the victory in their main events Sunday night at the Cresco Speedway.

Schmitt, who won last year’s Iron Man crown for the USRA Stock Cars, won the race into the first turn at the start of Sunday’s 20-lapper and held off Shay Curtin the entire distance with Saturday night’s winner, Kyle Falck, shadowing the whole way to take third.

Two-time defending USRA Stock Car National Champion Mitch Hovden finished fourth, followed by Shawn Peter, Lynn Panos, Pete Solum, Kevin Donlan, Steve Jackson and Austin Curtin.

Schmitt came into the Labor Day Weekend event trailing Hovden in the points battle. Although there was no change in position, Hovden’s lead is now just one point over Schmitt with two races remaining. Both have three wins, eight top-5s and nine top-10s in ten starts.

Similarly, Crapser captured his third Iron Man Challenge victory this season in the USRA B-Mod division by holding off Dan Wheeler, who sits second behind Crapser in the points.

Troy Hovey came home third in the 20-lap feature, with Mason Daughters fourth and former USRA B-Mod National Champion Brandon Hare fifth.

Casey Knutson finished sixth in his first Iron Man start this season, with Dan Hovden, Ben Moudry, Trevor Fecht and Jared Timmerman snagging the seventh through tenth spots.

The next Iron Man Challenge event for the USRA Stock Cars will take place Saturday, Sept. 14, as they make their final appearance at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., racing in support of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

The next Iron Man Challenge event for the USRA B-Mods will be the following week as they join the USMTS Modifieds for three days—Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-21—at the 15th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at Deer Creek.

The season finale for both classes will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, for the USRA Iron Man Championships at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa.
