Schultz honored at Lucas Oil Speedway banquet

WHEATLAND, Mo.—With nearly 200 drivers, crew members, sponsors, family and friends in attendance this past Saturday evening at University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Lucas Oil Speedway officially crowned the 2013 season champions in each of the four weekly classes.

A social hour kicked off the the evening's program as all in attendance were able to gather for fellowship and reflection on the 2013 racing season as an outstanding "Thrills and Spills" video compiled by Robert Claunch from RCR Designs played on the giant screen at the front of the banquet hall.

Upon completion of the invocation by Allen Perkins and Larry Smith of Raceway Ministries, dinner was served promptly at 7 p.m. as guests enjoyed a delicious combination of grilled beef medallions smothered with Mother's Brewery Brown Ale demi glaze and grilled chicken with roasted fiji apple compote.

Lucas Oil Speedway general manager/promoter Dan Robinson began the formal portion of the awards banquet with a welcome and thank you to all those that make each season possible.

Robinson noted that the speedway averaged over 118 cars for each of the weekly shows in 2013 while also noting an overall attendance increase of over 18,000 fans in 2013 over 2012.

He added that all four weekly racing series class sponsors had signed on for 2014 to a round of applause from all in attendance, and then turned the mic over to long time track announcer Kevin Fletcher to hand out the the driver awards.

Sedalia's Terry Schultz took home top honors in the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds.

In one of the most competitive classes in 2013, Schultz outlasted a stellar field of competitors to score his first ever Lucas Oil Speedway track championship.

There were 882 Modified drivers in 2013 that ran under the USRA banner nationwide in 2013, and five of the top ten in USRA national points ran at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Nevada's Jon Sheets compiled an outstanding season to finish second while local favorite Jason Pursley scored a win on the final night of the season to lock up the third spot.

Defending track champ Jason Russell used consistency to finish fourth while Chanute, Kan., veteran John Allen held down the final spot in the top five.

Stephen Muilenburg, Nathan Vaughn, Lucas Dobbs, Jeff Cutshaw and Tyler Brown completed the top ten.

Finally, to cap off the evening, Ozark Entertainment DJ Gabe broke out the jukebox turning the awards banquet into a dance hall and party atmosphere as those in attendance enjoyed the best music selections available.

All seemed to enjoy the evening and couldn't wait to talk about 2014.
