Rookie Breeschoten wins first Late Model feature

Spring Valley, MN. (June 8, 2002) - This weeks racing activities were sponsored by the Meadow Area News & Evans Printing and Publishing of Grand Meadow MN.

The street stocks hit the track first for their feature. The track was really fast tonight and after a little blading before the Late Model heats the upper groove really started to come in strong. And for most of the features the quickest way was around the top of the track, a few passes were made low with many passes coming out of the corners as some of the drivers drove low out of two for the advantage. On the start of the caution plagued street stock feature Jim Gustafson jumped into an early lead followed closely by John Bushman and Troy Bentz with the rest of the pack sorting out for position two and three wide coming out of the corners. Two laps later Jeff Brauer started to make his presence know and after passing Bentz for third closed in on the bumper of Bushman. On every restart tonight Gustafson was quick and accelerated out of three and four quickly with the field in close pursuit. Gustafson was able to pull into a couple car length advantage going into one on each restart. Brauer and Bushman ran close together for two laps until Brauer gained the advantage just past the half way point. At the stripe it was Gustafson first for his second straight win, Brauer second and Bushman third.

The Midwest Modifieds got the standing ovation tonight for a green/white/checker race tonight. In the heat races early, Jade Anderson slapped the front stretch guardrail and tumbled down the front straight. The crew worked hard and got the car back on the track for the feature. Chad Herman took the early lead with the rest of the field running two wide throughout the first two laps. Jerry Young and Neil Eckhart had a great battle going for the second spot as Herman pulled into a little lead. These top three drivers pulled away from the rest of the field, with Dan Fagerlind running a strong fourth all by himself. As the slap continued winding down, Young and Eckhart made up some ground an the three drivers went three wide down the straight with five to go. Young gained the advantage this lap with Eckhart and Herman battling for second. Fagerlind started to come back to life as the battle in front of him raged on and quickly pulled up to Eckhart 's back bumper. At the finish it was Jerry Young with his first feature win of the season. Herman held on for second with Eckhart third.

The super stocks had a strong run with a couple quick cautions most of the feature was run wide open. George Batzel took advantage of his front row starting spot and ran flawlessly around the top side of the track to move into the top spot. Mark Teske and Kevin Hager battled for the second spot with Chris Klinger and Bill Clemens battling for the fourth spot. These top five pull away from the field with Batzel pulling into a comfortable 6 car length advantage when a caution flew. On the restart Teske made a move under Hager to gain the second spot and started to battle with Batzel for the lead. Clemens won the battle with Klinger for the fourth spot and followed Hager closely around the track looking for a way past. At the checkers it was Batzel with his first win of the season, Teske second and Hager third.

Tim Donlinger debuted a new car tonight switching from the M&M Chassis that he has ran for the past year and a half. Tonight found him in a new Hoffman chassis, and the car was very sharp looking. Steve Wetzstein who recently change his color scheme pulled out to the early advantage and going along the back stretch on the second lap 6 cars stacked up on the back straight. All of the cars were able to continue and all of them stayed under power as the caution flew for debri. Wetzstein pulled back into the lead on the restart followed closely by Todd Scharkey in second with Tim Donlinger moving into the fourth spot. Behind them Paul Novotny and Bob Timm ran side by side for five laps for the fifth spot as the leader pulls up in corner four with a flat tire. On the restart Scharkey took over the top spot followed by Bruce Angst. Donlinger and Timm had a good battle going and swapped positions three times at the midway point of the feature. Scharkey was strong up front and continued to lead to the checkers. Angst finished in second and Donlinger third.

The Late Model count has been slowly improving each week with different drivers showing up every week. Many of them have had their sites set on Bob Timm this year as he has had the hot hand winning the first five features. There was even talk of putting a bounty on Timm, but tonight the streak ended. Unfortunately the streak ended on bad circumstances as Timm was unable to make the call for the heat or feature for the late model division. Rookie driver Eric Breeschoten was the second Late Model driver to win a feature at the track this year. The first feature win for Breeschoten was nothing but dominate tonight as he ran away from the field. Breeschoten pulled into the lead on the first lap and had put a half a lap between himself and the second place car of Ben Mattick. Mattick and Jon Chrest had a good battle going for the first half of the race with Brad Waits pulling up to do battle with them. Chrest was quick on the lower line with Mattick running the lower to middle and Waits up on the cushion. Waits pulled along side of Mattick a couple times but at the finish it was Breeschoten with the win, Mattick second and Waits third.

The Modified Lites were the final feature of the night with Jeff Jech taking the early lead. Brian Shaw quickly moved into the second spot with Daniel Wendt in third. These top three pulled steadily away from the field with a close race between Shaw and Jech running nose to tail for most of the feature. Coming to the white flag Shaw went high into three and dove below Jech to take over the top spot. At the checkers Shaw came home with the win, Jech second and Wendt third.
