KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Kelly Shryock made the most of his outside row-two starting position in the USRA Modified feature by taking the lead as the field came around to complete lap 1. Defending champion, Nic Bidinger, gave chase early and often but couldn’t muster the energy to successfully battle for the lead and would finish second. Like Bidinger on the bumper of Shryock, Mark Schafman tail-grabbed Bidinger for the duration of the 25-lap event, edging out Tim Karrick for third. Kerry Davis started the season racing from 13th to finish fifth.

Jake Richards, sporting a new number and new sponsors for his 2014 campaign, started out the season with a hard-fought win in the USRA B-Mod feature. The Kansas City driver had to run a clean, hard line to catch early leader Gene Claxton and it would take him nine of the 15 laps before being able to successful pass him. Had there been another couple laps then Claxton would’ve felt the pressure from Luke Nieman, who raced from his 18th starting position to third. Heat 3 winner Chad Feather, an early contender in this race, watched his car fade to a fourth-place finish. After a post-race disqualification, Tim Powell, was awarded with the fifth-place finish.

Brother-in-laws Brett Heeter and Justin Seifert picked up where they left off last year in the USRA Stock Car division. Heeter, defending champion and winner of nine of the last eleven races in 2013, took advantage of the pole-position, shooting out to an early and commanding lead. That lasted until a lap-two caution bunched the field together, with Seifert now right on his back bumper. For the next seven laps these two were side by side, seemingly perfectly matched. It was on lap 9 that Seifert, the 2012 champion, was finally able to get past the front bumper of Heeter and motor on for the win. A missed shift on a late-race restart caused Heeter end up with a fourth-place finish. High school junior and Heat 1 winner Jeff Elder ran a great race to finish second, edging out Jay Barnes. Winner of the 2012 and 2013 opening night feature, Joe Smith Jr. rounded out the top five.

“Racing on the river's edge” continues every Friday night through October with the USRA Modifieds, Grand Nationals, USRA B-Mods and USRA Stock Cars.  Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45 and the first race gets under way at 7:30. Adult ticket prices are $12, kids ages 7-12 are $6 and children 6 and younger are admitted free. Senior citizens and military personnel with ID are admitted for $10.
