Timm near perfect at DCS

KASSON, Minn. (July 14, 2002) - It was another perfect evening for racing at the Dodge County Speedway on Sunday. Weather was great, and with a fairly good turn out of cars, it was sure to be a fun night.

The first feature of the evening were the WISSOTA Street Stocks. Steve Goodenough was on the pole, and would use that position to his advantage, jumping out to take the lead at the drop of the green.

Jim Gustafson and Dan Gullikson followed in second and third, while Jeff Brauer started to pick off cars to move through the field. Brauer caught Dan Gullikson and started to apply pressure, and would eventually take the spot.

Brauer then went to work on Gustafson for second, and it was only a matter of time until Brauer got the second spot from Gustafson. And at the same time, Gustafson looked to lose some momentum, which allowed Dan Gullikson to get by also to move in to third.

Goodenough was able to hold on for the win, followed at the stripe by Brauer, Dan Gullikson, Gustafson, and Greg Erickson to round out the top five.

Next up were the always entertaining Midwest Modifieds. Albert Wytaske and Neil Eckhart shared row one, and it was Wytaske getting the jump on the field. Eckahrt gave chase, and got close a few times.

Carter Gerlach was extremely fast up on the cushion, and was making his way to the front in a hurry. Dan Fagerlind was pressuring Eckhart for second, and Gerlach was closing on all three lead cars.

As the laps wound down, it was still the three car dogfight in the front for lead, and Gerlach got within striking distance with two to go. Pulling even with Fagerlind on the last lap, a slower car got between Geralch and any chance of making a bid for the top three positions.

Wytaske held on for the win followed by Eckhart, Fagerlind, Gerlach, and Greg Pfieffer.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks were next in line, and it was Bill Clemens and Dave Haberman on the front row. The two cars were almost even at the stripe at the completion of lap one. But on the second lap, Clemens gained the advantage, with Haberman tucking in to second. Bill Stettner was on the move early, and after two laps was in fourth.

The first caution came when Brandon Jensen got turned around in turn two, and Matt Sinna was tagged with the caution and sent to the tail.

After the re-start, Stettner continued to march towrds the front, moving past Dave Solumn, and Dave Haberman to take over the second position.

Kelly Anderson was doing battle with Brandon Jensen for the sixth spot, while Stettner tried to find a way to track down Clemens for the lead. Jensen won out in the contest for sixth, and the yellow flew once agoan, when Mark Wytaske spun exiting turn four and would re-start from the tail.

Clemens still held the lead and would manage to stay there, and hold off Stettner to pick up the victory. Haberman finished third, followed by Solumn and Jensen.

When the Modifieds took to the track, it was apparent that this was going to be a great one. Todd Scharkey was back with a new car, and Mike Sorenson was also on hand with his modified.

Dave Siercks would start from the pole, alongside Todd Scharkey, and it was Siercks winning the drag race to turn one and taking the early lead. Bob Timm went to the top early and challenged Scharkey for second. Sorenson and Wetzstein were also in the lead pack, all trying to get by Dave Siercks.

Timm, Wetzstein, and Sorenson were going three-wide for third, with nobody having a clear advantage. After a few laps of some very close quarters between the three cars, it was Bob Timm coming out with the third position. Timm then went after Scharkey, while Sorenson and Wetzstein continued to jockey for position. The battle ended when Sorenson and Wetzstein made contact coming off of turn two, with Wetzstein sliding to a halt in the infield. Sorenson was charged with the cauiton and sent to the tail of the field.

After the re-start, Todd Klees came up to join the front-runners, and started to turn up the heat on Wetzstein. Timm was looking to the outside of Scharkey, and got by in the late satges of the race and tried to reel in Siercks. Klees also was able to get by Scharkey. Timm got within striking distance with a lap to go, and by carrying great momentum on the top side, was able to complete the pass on Siercks going down the backstretch. Klees also squeaked by Siercks crossing the stripe to finish a very solid second. Siercks, Scharkey, and Wetzstein rounded out the top five.

The fifth and final event on the night was the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Rookie Ben Mattick and veteran, Joel Cryderman would share the front row.

Cryderman shot out front past Mattick to take the lead, and Bob Timm was looking very fast on the top, looking to make it two-for-two on the evening. Mark Teske was also using the top, and was able to pick up a few positions in the early stages.

Cryderman was out front comfortably, but Timm was rallying, and closing in. Teske got some pressure from Nick Herrick, and Jon Van Minsel for third. The three engaged in some great side by side racing, with Herrick and Teske swapping the position a few times.

Timm was starting to close the gap on Cryderman, and at times, pulled to within a car length in turns three and four. Cryderman seemed to have the advantage coming off the corners, and Timm was able to go in to the corners harder.

The laps were winding down, and Timm couldn't quite make up enough ground to pick up another feature win for the night. Teske came home third, followed by Van Minsel, and Herrick.

All in all, another great night of racing at the Dodge County Speedway, with the next race on Wednesday night during the fair. WISSOTA Street Stocks, Super Stocks, and Midwest Modifieds will be on hand, for another action-packed evening of racing excitement.
