WEST UNION, Iowa -- The 2014 Fayette County Fair race featuring the Iron Man Challenge USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods plus USRA Hobby Stocks in West Union, Iowa, was anything else but boring. It was a typical mud-slinging night at the track full of lead changes, a rivaled donnybrook and last-lap heroics.

The USRA Hobby Stocks got off to a rocky start during the feature race. Multiple yellows were waived during the first four laps of the race. Once the drivers started to settle in, the battle was on for the top spot.

Steve Holthaus, who started in the front row, only lead a few laps under green. However, a costly slip-up in corner 2 by Holthaus was all that Steve Larson needed to get past the veteran driver. Larson snagged the top spot and drove his way into victory lane.

When asked about picking up the victory on fair night, Larson said, “It’s awesome. The car was a little banged up, but we finished on all four wheels. We were unsure if were we going to be able to run, but we gave it a shot.”

As for winning on fair night, Larson’s response was “You can’t describe it.”

Larson was followed by Holthaus, Josh Ludeking, Brady Link and Paul Seabrooke as they rounded out the top 5.

It was also the Iron Man Challenge for the USRA B-Mod and USRA Stock Cars Wednesday night at the Fayette County Speedway. Coming into the action, only 135 points separated the top three spots in the USRA B-Mods.

Fresh off a win on Sunday night at the Cresco Speedway, Dan Hovden again started on pole for the main event. What looked to be as if Hovden was well on his way of picking up his second Iron Man Challenge victory of the season, a caution with 12 laps remaining brought the field back together with Matt Jones running second and defending series champion Cory Crapser running in third.

Hovden and Jones began to drive away from the field as the laps started to dwindle. The two drivers exchanged multiple lead changes, but on the last lap Hovden was able to secure a victory on fair night again. Hovden was followed by Jones, Crapser, points leader Dan Wheeler and Jeremy Schaufenbuel to round out the top 5.

The USRA Stock Car feature ran from green to checkers on Wednesday night. Tom Schmitt, the current USRA Stock Car Iron Man Challenge points leader, started on the pole for the big dance. Schmitt led the first half of the race but quickly surrendered his lead to Mitch Hovden, who started sixth.

As Hovden and Schmitt started working their way through lap traffic, lurking behind the them was veteran stock car driver Dan Trimble. As the white flag dropped for the final time on Wednesday night, the Fayette County Speedway saw a three-wide battle for the lead. Coming out of corner 4, Trimble snuck low on the bottom side of the track and was able to beat Hovden to the line by a half-car-length.

Trimble lead only one lap of the feature event, but he claimed his first Iron Man victory of the year. Hovden, Schmitt, Dillon Anderson and Lynn Panos ended the night in second through fifth, respectively, for the USRA Stock Cars.

The next Iron Man Challenge event for the USRA B-Mods will be on Friday, Aug. 15, at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., while the next USRA Stock Car event is Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Marshalltown (Iowa) Speedway where both classes will share the spotlight with the USMTS Modifieds.
