Gerlach, Gullikson gun down Dodge County foes

by Chris Stepan

KASSON, Minn. (July 29, 2001) - The Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, MN welcomed another large group of competitors to a regular racing program in all four divisions on Sunday, July 29th.

Dan Gullikson took the lead at the start of the Street Stock feature from the front row, bringing Kevin Adams and Jeff Brauer with him into the top three early on. Several early cautions flew over the field, keeping everyone bunched up, but Gullikson continued his advantage over Adams, who was all over him throughout the entire event.

As the leaders were encountering lapped traffic, Gullikson tried to sneak between Adams and the lapped machine and ran out of room, causing some tense moments after the field crashed behind him. All that were involved were able to continue and as the laps began to wind down, Adams continued to apply very heavy pressure to Gullikson, but Dan capped off a great weekend with his first ever feature win at Dodge County and second win of the weekend. Adams was able to hold off Brauer for third at the stripe.

Carter Gerlach has been flying lately in his Midwest Modified and tonight was no exception as he bolted from the second row into the lead on lap 2 and never looked back. Gerlach checked out on the field in a hurry and left the battle for second between Matt Madsen and Greg Pfiefer behind him. The battle for the runner-up spot was a great one all race long as Madsen worked very hard to steal second away from Pfiefer on lap 8 as Jim Arnold began to work his way toward the front.

Once Madsen was securely in second, he began to reel in Gerlach as Arnold appeared in third on lap 10 and was scrapping for that position with Dane Schultz. Once Arnold got by Schultz, he began to come after the leaders, but ran out of time as Gerlach ran away with his second win of the season ahead of Madsen, who equaled a career best second place finish in a feature event and Arnold in third.

Dave Haberman took the lead at the beginning of the Super Stock feature, only to be pressured very hard by Nick Herrick early on up front. Herrick was making the low line of the speedway work very well and was able to pull alongside of Haberman for the top spot on several occasions. A great battle was ensuing for third between Mark Teske, Stacy Edgar and Todd Miller. The trio was racing in a very tight pack for position just ahead of Don Eischens and Tim Borgeson, who were mixing it up with Curt Myers and Bill Clemens. Eischens was the first to get through traffic and set his sights on the leaders and pulled alongside of Herrick for second on lap 10. Don was able to steal the spot away and began to reel in Haberman up front. Borgeson also was able to sneak through traffic and moved into battle with Herrick for third one lap later. Borgeson secured the spot and set off after the leaders as well.

Teske and Haberman were engaged in a great battle for the lead until Eischens came along and stole it from them on lap 12. The battle continued, only now it was for second, which Teske secured one lap later and set off after the leader. A lap 18 caution, bunched up the field for a 2-lap dash to the checkered, which saw Borgeson slide under Teske into second on the white flag lap, only to have Teske return the favor coming out of four for the checkered. Eischens went on to pick up the win ahead of Teske and Borgeson. Steve Wetzstein bided his time over the course of the first several laps of the IMCA Modified main event and picked his way from his 4th row starting spot into the lead on lap 5. Once Wetzstein got into the lead, the race was over as he immediately bolted away from the battle for second, which was a hot one between Nate Wasmund and Jordan Steier. Steier snatched the spot and began to try to keep Wetzstein in his sights, while Darwyn Karau, Mike Sorensen, Brad Waits and Jay Ihrke were all locked in battle for fifth. Wetzstein left nothing to the imagination as he completely dominate the feature for the second week in a row and easily cruised to the win over Steier and Wasmund.

Racing resumes at Dodge County this Sunday with regular racing action for WISSOTA Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds. The first green flag is set to fly at 7pm.
