Karrick, Anderson, Bryant win at Lakeside

Tim Karrick captured the USRA Modified feature win on Friday, June 12, at the Lakeside Speedway.

Tim Karrick captured the USRA Modified feature win on Friday, June 12, at the Lakeside Speedway.

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—It finally felt normal again at Lakeside Speedway on Friday night. The weather, which had played havoc on the Midwest this season, finally took a break and let the racers, fans, workers and sponsors get back to what they love doing the most: dirt track racing.

In the USRA Modified feature it was a former multiple-time track champion, Tim Karrick, driving to the win.

Darron Fuqua, who has been riding a hot hand, jumped out to the early lead in the main event. Even though Fuqua has picked up some feature wins at other USRA tracks, he has only one win so far at Lakeside this season. This night he would not get his second.

Karrick, on the other hand, got off to a good start with a heat race win earlier in the night and his strong performance would follow to the feature. Karrick would run down Fuqua and get by him for the lead and with an open track in front of him Karrick would be tough to beat.

Lap after lap Karrick hit his marks. That was until the white flag lap. On the final circuit Karrick missed his mark just once and that’s all that 2x feature winner this season, Kerry Davis, needed. Davis pulled up along side Karrick and the duel was on.

Karrick would show just how much he wanted this one as he sailed it deep into the turn and then took away Davis’ line to hold on for the win.

Since Lakeside Speedway returned to dirt, no other driver has won more Modified features than Karrick. This season there have been a total of eight different feature winners.

Davis would settle for second and would also maintain the points lead, third would go to Fuqua, fourth went to a hard-racing Terry Schultz and Lance Town brought home the fifth-place finish.

USRA Modified heat race winners were Karrick, Schultz and Matt Johnson.

Earlier this season, Kevin Anderson had a stranglehold on the USRA Stock Car division. Anderson pulled down three wins early in 2015, but had a bad accident during the USAC race at Lakeside. The wreck would destroy his car and put a halt to any momentum he had. Anderson would take some time off and put a new ride together. He raced for the first time on Friday night.

Starting outside front row for the feature didn’t hurt Anderson’s chances for a strong finish. Upon returning back to Lakeside competing wasn’t the only option for Anderson, he wanted to win.

Anderson didn’t need to knock any rust off early as he won the 2nd heat of the night. A good starting spot for the A Main would give him the opportunity to start where he had left off.

Jumping out in front of the pole setter, Brent Alverson, Anderson drove to the front of the pack and would hold on for magic win #4 on the year. His fourth win of the season is second most of any driver (Tim Shields has the most wins with 7).

Even though Anderson would drive on for the win there was a lot of great racing action going on through the field.

Brett Heeter raced his way to the runner-up spot, substitute driver Jason Ryun showed why he is a good choice after finishing third, Jim Powell Jr., the points leader, finished fourth and Thomas Roberts rounded out the top 5.

USRA Stock Car heat race winners were Anderson, Seifert and Heeter.

A large field of 30 USRA B-Mod aces showed up to battle it out on Friday night.

All season long Lakeside Speedway fans have been treated to some dominating performances in the B Mod division. Tonight would see another 1st time winner in victory lane and he got there in impressive fashion.

Andy Bryant is one of the best B Mod racers in the area, if not the entire Midwest. Friday night Bryant would come home 2nd in his heat race. Not bad considering he started 5th. It gave him a front row starting spot for the feature.

Bryant parlayed his front row spot into the lead spot at the start of the main event. Unlucky for the rest of the competition he wouldn’t relinquish that spot all night long.

There were a few yellows that hindered progress during the night, but Bryant answered the bell for each restart and would take control all the way to the checkered flag. It was Bryant’s first win of the season and he also became the fifth different winner on the season.

Ed Noll, who has two wins on the year, drove from ninth to second in the feature, Three-time feature winner Brad Smith finished third, fourth went to Luke Nieman and rounding out the top 5 was Eddie Schwope, who started the main event in 11th.

USRA B-Mod heat race winners were Smith, Shadren Turner, Colten Stevens and Tim Powell. The "B" feature was won by Vic Tranckino.

Racing action continues next Friday night, June 19. The spectator gates will open up at 5 p.m., hot laps will be at 6:45 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $12, kids 7 to 12 are $6, children under 6 are FREE and military personnel, students and seniors get in for $10 with proper I.D.
