Davis tops USRA Modifieds in return to Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Minn.—After being rained out at the Dodge County Fair on July 16, the historic Dodge County Speedway roared back to life on a picture perfect Saturday night. A large and emotional crowd turned out to support the show which was the first program in nearly three years in Kasson, Minn.

The USRA Modifieds were the division headliner and 15 cars took to the track for their feature. During the redraw at intermission, Dustin Sorensen drew the number one pill and Brandon Davis drew the outside pole position. It was kind of ironic that these two redrew row one on the reopening of the legendary facility. Both are third generation drivers whose grandfathers and fathers raced here. Sorensen’s grandfather, Dick, was the 1979 and 1981 Late Model track champion and his father, Mike, owns two track titles and is the all-time Modified win leader with 47 feature triumphs.

Sorensen led from the start while Davis dropped back to fifth. Sorensen ran the low line and then Davis went to the top of the speedway and started to move back towards the front. Davis moved to second and challenged Sorensen for the lead on lap 4, and then zoomed around the top to take the lead on lap 6.

From there, Davis led the rest of the 20-lap feature to score his ninth win of the season worth $1,400. In Daviss’ winnings was an extra $100 on behalf of the family of Clayton Bishop in his memory. Bishop was a Dodge County fair board member for 41 years and was a big advocate of the speedway.

Josh Angst worked by Sorensen to finish second with Jake Timm in fourth and Darwyn Karau in the top five.

Stevenson Insurance of Kasson put up a $100 hard charger award that went to Todd Scharkey. Jacob Dahle also received an extra $100 from Stevenson for the Hard Luck Award being the first car out of the race.

Four USRA Limited Late Models were on hand for their program. When two cars dropped out right away the race was shortened to a three-lap “match race” of sorts between Tom Brink and Justin Sass. Sass came away the winner at the checkered flag.

There is plans for another race program for 2015, so keep an eye on www.racekasson.com or follow the speedway’s Facebook page for more information to come.
