Logan Fitzpatrick wins USRA Hobby Stock Nationals at I-90 Speedway

HARTFORD, S.D.—When is the last time you saw a driver go from the 19th starting position to the pole before the first lap was scored? While you're scratching your head trying to figure that one out, it happened Saturday night during the 8th Annual USRA Hobby Stock Nationals at I-90 Speedway.

How did it happen? Four caution flags and a red before the first lap.

The red flag waved right away as an accident involving Justin Bolluyt and Nate Barger stopped the race. Bolluyt ended up on his roof with his car on fire on the front stretch. Fortunately, Bolluyt was able to escape from his car quickly and he was okay. Barger continued minus his hood and front clip.

A parade of cautions followed as Tim Waltner, Mike Chaney and Michalob Voeltz all spun while at the front of the field. Hence, the heavy attrition rate. Two non-consecutive laps were scored along with another rash of cautions when the race finally hit the time limit. Logan Fitzpatrick had led the first two laps prior to the green-white-checkered finish.

Another caution occurred on the final lap. Jason Bradley, Dylan Fitzpatrick and Dustin Gulbrandson were all trying to get by the leader. Fitzpatrick found a hole to get by two cars going into the first turn. However, Gulbrandson was called for turning Fitzpatrick in the fourth turn. Fitzpatrick's reaction was to throw his helmet at Gulbrandson's car as he drove by under caution. The decision cost him a chance at a third USRA Hobby Stock Nationals win.

The second green-white-checkered finish went a little more smoothly for the leader as Logan Fitzpatrick beat Bradley to the finish line. The race paid $500 to win, however, the I-90 Progressive Jackpot added another $481 to Fitzpatrick's win for a total of $981. Several fans, businesses and drivers added to the jackpot throughout the night to make it a memorable win for the Sioux Falls driver.

USRA Hobby Stock rookie Michalob Voeltz raced his way back to third. Barger and his crew did a nice job of managing the race after his opening green flag accident and stops in the work area. Barger made it up to fourth.

Dave Kennedy caught and eventually passed Aaron Wiersma to win the USRA B-Mod feature. Wiersma led the first 10 laps. The Sioux Falls drivers raced side-by-side for close to three laps before Kennedy cleared Wiersma. Before the checkered flag came out on lap 15 Nick Barger also got by Wiersma for a second place finish. Barger started eighth, two rows behind Kennedy.

Coca-Cola sponsors racing this Saturday night, Aug. 15. Kids 16 and under will receive a free hot dog and Coke! Plus, Gary's Tire Service of Sioux Falls has added money to the USRA Hobby Stock purse. Hobby Stocks will race for $400 to win and $300 for second place. Hot laps begin at 6:30pm with racing at 7:00.
