Purkey tops MLRA Late Models at Memphis; Cook, Huls, Savage, Burgtorf, Evans top USRA CGSCS features

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- Pepsi-Memphis Bottling Night at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway produced three new winners in Jason Cook (USRA Stock Cars), Abe Huls (USRA Hobby Stocks) and Brandon Savage (Hornets), while Mark Burgtorf (USRA Modifieds) and Jack Evans Jr (USRA B-Modifieds) picked up back-to-back wins. Plus, Al Purkey topped the MLRA Late Models debut at the speedway.

The 12 lap USRA B-Modified feature was the first one on the track, with Pete Gramc and Ron York leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place starter Jeff Waterman taking the lead on the start. Waterman would hold the top spot until lap 6, when Jerry Reese Jr., who started ninth, slipped by for the lead. Reese Jr. then led the next three laps, when Jack Evans Jr. went under him on lap 10 to take over the top spot. Evans Jr. then held on for the final two laps to pick up his second win in a row and third of the season at the speedway. Reese Jr. was second, York held on for third, Waterman came in fourth, with Mark Thede rounding out the top five. York and Chris Larson claimed wins in the heat races.

Troy Alexander and Harley Hill made up the front row for the 15 lap USRA Stock Car feature, with Alexander jumping out front on lap 1. While Alexander paced the field, the battle for second was heating up between Jason Cook, John Oliver Jr., Mike Robinson, Matt Greiner and Hill. Cook would slip under Alexander on lap 10 to take over the top spot and then held off Oliver Jr. on the final five laps to claim his first win of 2005 at Memphis. Alexander slipped to third, Greiner came from the rear after an early spin to finish fourth, with Robinson coming home fifth. Heat race winners were Hill and Robinson.

Up next was the 10 lap Hornet feature, with Dennis Schulte and TJ Newberry on the front row. Schulte grabbed the lead on the start, with Brandon Savage and Tyler Schulte, who started ninth, close behind in second. Savage would slip under Dennis on lap 3 to take over the top spot and then held it until a restart on lap 8. Tyler went by Savage on the restart and then held it until the checkered flag. But the win was given to Savage, when Schulte was pentalized two spots for jumping the restart. For Savage it was his first win of the season at the speedway. D.Schulte was second, T.Schulte was credited with third, Andrew Hustead came from tenth to finish fourth, with Jayson Barnes rounding out the top five. D.Schulte and T.Schulte picked up the heat race wins.

Michael St.Clair and Brandon Symmonds made up the front row for the 12 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with St.Clair moving out front on the start. St.Clair continued to lead, as a six car battle for second was going on. Holt would move to the outside of St.Clair on lap 8 to take over the top spot and then held it until lap 10, when he pulled out with mechanical problems. Abe Huls, who started 8th, inherited the lead and then held on for the final two laps to claim his first win of 2005 at Memphis. Mike Shelton came from 9th to finish second, Symmonds came home third, Tony Becerra was fourth, with Brian Howerton, who started 11th, coming home fifth. Heat race winners were Holt and St.Clair.

The 20 lap USRA Modified feature had Kevin Peters and Michael Long lead the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was fourth place starter, Ryan Meyer taking the lead on lap 1. Meyer would only hold the lead until lap 4, when Tony Fraise went by to take the top spot. Fraise's lead only lasted for two laps, as Mark Burgtorf slipped by on the bottom of lap 6 to grab the top spot. Burgtorf then led the final 14 laps to pick up his second win in a row at the speedway. Fraise was second, Long was third, Meyer fourth, with Mike Bennett coming from the rear after an early spin to round out the top five. Burgtorf and Long picked up the heat race wins.

Thirty O'Reilly MLRA Late Models sign in for their debut at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway, with four heats and a semi being run to cut the field to 22 cars. Tommy Elston, Al Purkey, Alan Vaughn and Chris Smyser picked up the heat race wins, while Shane Essary won the semi. Purkey and Vaughn made up the front row for the 40 lap O'Reilly MLRA Late Model feature, but it was Elston grabbing the lead on the drop of the green flag. Elston pulled away from the field until he entered lapped traffic on lap 18. Purkey would pull close to Elston and tried several times on the outside of him to take the lead, but Elston would hold off all Purkey's challenges. Purkey would get the opening he needed on lap 24 to grab the top spot from Elston and then pulled away in the non-stop race to claim the $2,500 top prize. Local drivers Elston, Burgtorf and Smyser would finish second thru fourth, with Duke Whisenant rounding out the top five.

Coming up next week at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway will be Primrose Realty and Kay Eggleston Bookkeeping Night. The evening will be highlighted with double features in all six divisions, as the rained out features from May 21st will be run before the regular night of racing begins. Gates will open at 5pm, hot laps at 6:15 and racing to follow.
