Fraise, Alexander, Shelton capture USRA Casey's wins at Scotland County Fair; Hull tops Sprints

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders helped kick off the 2005 Scotland County Fair at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway, Tuesday, with the help of Veryl Gordy, 20/20 Motorsports and Pam's Cakes. Finding their way to victory lane on the evening were Jerrod Hull (Sprints), Tony Fraise (Modifieds), Troy Alexander (Stock Cars) and Mike Shelton (Hobby Stocks).

The 15-lap Hobby Stock feature was up first with Jerry Shoemaker and Mike Shelton on the front row. Shelton jumped out front on lap 1 with Shoemaker, Michael St. Clair and Josh Soper battling for second. Shelton continued to hold the top spot when the scariest accident on the evening occurred on lap 10. Tony Becerra's car was clipped by another competitor on the front stretch, sending him flipping. Becerra's car came to rest on it's top and then was engulfed in flames. Becerra was pulled from the remains by the fast-acting fire crew and track workers. He was unhurt, but the car was destroyed in the process. After the wreck was cleaned up, Shelton took off into the lead again and held it for the final five laps to claim his third win of the season at the speedway. Alan Hultz came from sixth to finish in second, Jim Lynch charged from 11th to finish third, St. Clair held on for fourth, with Mark Holt coming from 12th to round out the top 5. Abe Huls, St. Clair and Shelton picked up heat race wins.

Pete Agee and Tyler McClure drew the front row for the 18-lap Stock Car feature, with third place starter Troy Alexander grabbing the lead on lap 1. Alexander continued to lead the field, as Lorne Parks and Ryan Cook, who started eighth, were working there way to the front. Cook jumped to the outside of Alexander on lap 16 to take over the lead, with Parks following him into second. Cook and Parks went into turns 3-4 side by side on the final lap, with Parks getting into Cook. Cook and Parks both spun, allowing Alexander to go by for the win. Pat Rachels came from 11th to finish second, Jim Lynch came from ninth to third, Matt Greiner finished fourth after starting 12th, with Charlie Rindom charging from 19th to coming home in fifth. Heat race winners were Alexander, Lynch and David Boas.

Up next was the 20-lap Modified feature with David Holder and Paul Lawson leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Zack VanderBeek edged Holder at the line by inches to take the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 5. Tony Fraise, who started seventh, slipped under VanderBeek on lap 5 to over take the lead. Fraise then held on for the final 15 laps to pick up the $1,000 top prize -- his fourth win in a row at Memphis. VanderBeek was second, Darin Thye was third, Kevin Cale charged from 14th to finish in fourth, with Holder holding on for fifth. Mark VanWinkle, Jim Roach and Mark Burgtorf claimed wins in the heat races.

The final feature of the evening was the 20-lap Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders. Matt Rogerson and Jesse Giannetto made up the front row for the feature, with Rogerson powering into the lead on lap 1. Rogerson's lead only lasted until lap 3, when Giannetto jumped to his outside for the top spot. But Rogerson would come back on the bottom of the speedway to take the lead back on lap 5, with Giannetto coming back on the top side to take the lead again on lap 6. A red flag for the roll over of Jimmy Davies -- who was not injured -- slowed the pace on lap 12. On the restart, Jerrod Hull would slip under Giannetto to over take the top spot and then held on for his fifth Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders win of 2005. Giannetto was second, Bobby Hawks was third, Rogerson slipped to fourth, with John VanDenBerg rounding out the top 5. Rogerson, Hawks and Brent Antill claimed the three heat wins. Hawks also picked up the dash victory.

There will be no racing at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway this Saturday, July 23, due to the Scotland County Fair. The USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series will continue on Saturday, July 30, with Slayton Polaris and Helena sponsoring the night's racing action. Also joining the USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Modifieds, USRA Hobby Stocks, Cruisers and Hornets will be the Late Models, thanks to sponsorship from Wood Amoco BP of Donnellson, Iowa. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:15 and racing to follow.
