Meyer, McDaniel, York get first USRA wins of 2005 at Memphis; Hawks survives to win Sprint Invaders feature

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- Despite all the rain in the last two days, racing resumed in the USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway on J&J Ag Night. Ryan Meyer (USRA Modifieds), Bert McDaniel (USRA Stock Cars) and Ron York (USRA B-Modifieds) picked up their fist victories of 2005 at Memphis, while Mark Holt (USRA Hobby Stocks) and Craig Spilker (Cruisers) claimed repeat wins. The Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders were also in action at the speedway, with Bobby Hawks holding on for the feature win.

Larry Newman and John Baker led the field to the green flag in the 12 lap USRA B-Modified feature, but it was fourth place starter Jerry Poor edging out Newman by inches to lead lap 1. Poor continued to lead, with Jack Evans Jr., who started 8th, and Chris Larson, who came from ninth, challenging him for the top spot. Ron York, who started 10th, slipped under both Poor and Evans Jr. on lap 11 to take over the top spot, with Evans Jr. and Poor getting together on the front stretch. The caution came out to set up a green-white-checkered finish. York would pull out on the restart and then held off a fast charging Bob Woodrow, who started dead last (19th), to claim his first win of 2005 at Memphis. Kelly Smith was third, Newman held on for fourth, with Poor slipping to fifth. Heat race winners were Chris Larson and Jim Gillenwater.

Up next was the 12 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Justin Hamelton and Chris Wibbell drawing the front row. Wibbell would jump out to the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 3, when Mark Holt slipped under him for the top spot. Wibbell wouldn't give up easy, as he came back on lap 7 to grab the lead back, but Holt came back the next lap to take over the top spot. Holt then held off Wibbell over the next four laps to pick up his third win of the season at the speedway. Brian Howerton came from ninth to finish in third, Adam Birck charged from 15th to finish in fourth, with Hamelton coming home in fifth. Howerton, Holt and Brad Weber picked up the heat race wins.

The 10 lap Cruiser feature was the next to hit the track, with Daniel Robbins and Michael St.Clair leading the field to the drop of the green flag. St.Clair took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 and then would hold it until lap 3, when he got sideways coming out of four. Craig Spilker took advantage of St.Clair's mistake to take over the top spot. Spilker then held off Jeremy Buss to claim his second win of 2005. St.Clair would recover to finish in 3rd, Dave Hudson was fourth, with Chris Dibart coming from 11th to round out the top five. Heat race winners were Spilker and St.Clair.

Bobby Hawks and Josh Schneiderman made up the front row for the 20 lap Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders feature, with Hawks jumping out front to lead lap 1. The feature's first caution came out on lap 3, for the stalled car of Matt Harms, on the restart Randy Martin, who was running third, would flip in turn two to bring out the first red. A third attempt to restart lap 3 was failed, when Justin Parrish came to a stop in turns one and two. After three attempts, lap four was finally completed with Hawks leading over Schneiderman and Jesse Giannetto. The second red flag of the event came out on lap 10, when Jesse Giannetto and Hawks got together coming out of two while battling for the lead. Giannetto would spin and Nick Eastin would hit him head on. Both drives climbed from there mangled cars uninjured. Hawks would jump out front on the restart and then held it until lap 12, when John Schulz, who started 11th, slipped under him for the top spot. Schultz would pull out to a straight away lead and held it until lap 18, when mechanical gremlins bit him. Hawks would inherit the lead and then held off Ryan Jamison, who started 7th, to pick up the win. Schneiderman had a career best run in third, Korey Weyant came from tenth to finish in fourth, with Jimmy Davies coming home in fifth. Hawks would pick up the J&K Racing heat, Jesse Giannetto won the Symposium Talent Contest heat, with Davies claiming victory in the Ideal Ready Mix heat. The Mike Campbell's Body Shop & Towing Shake-Up Dash went to Jesse Giannetto.

Up next was the 15 lap USRA Stock Car feature, with Troy Alexander and Bert McDaniel on the front row. McDaniel would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1, with Alexander and Ryan Coook close behind in second and third. McDaniel went on to lead all 15 laps and held off several challenges from Mike Robinson, who started ninth, to pick up his first win of the season at the speedway. Dave Hemsted came from 8th to finish in third, Ryan Cook was fourth, with points leader Jason Cook coming from 18th to round out the top five. McDaniel and Robinson picked up the heat race wins.

The final feature of the evening was the 15 lap USRA Modified feature, with Ryan Meyer and David Wietholder, who moved up to start second when Jim Roach decided to start last, making up the front row. Meyer would move out front on the drop of the green flag, with Wietholder and Tony Fraise battling for second. Meyer then went on to lead all 15 laps and held off several attempts by Mark Burgtorf to over take the top spot, to claim his first win of the season at Memphis. Fraise was third, fourth went to Steve Stewart, who came from the rear after an early incident, with Jerry Reese Jr. coming from 15th to finish in fifth. Heat race winners were Stewart and Burgtorf.

Coming up next week will be Bradley Insurance Night, with the chase for the USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series moving ahead in the Modified, Stock Car, B-Modified and Hobby Stock divisions, with points also being awarded in the Cruiser and Hornet classes. Gates next week at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway will open at 5:00pm, with hot laps at 6:15 and racing to follow.
