Champions crowned at 2005 Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway awards banquet

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- Nearly 200 drivers, crew members and their families were on hand Saturday, Nov. 5, as officials from RL Promotions hosted the annual post-season awards banquet for the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The event was held at the Harry L. Anderson American Legion Post #34 in Oskaloosa, with the top-10 in each division honored, as well as special awards being doled out the class of 2005.

In the USRA Modified division, Steve Stewart of Washington was honored as the 2005 track champion -- his career-first track championship. In addition to capturing his first win of the season on the next-to-last night of racing, Stewart also scored nine top-5's and 13 top-10 finishes in his 15 starts. Completing the top-10 in the final points were 4R Ron VerBeek, Zack VanderBeek, Steven Blattler, Brad Pinkerton, Toby Vandekamp, Mike Hughes, Terry Walker, Roger Baxter and Brian Edel.

In the USRA Stock Car division, Oskaloosa's T.J. Criss wrapped up a stellar 2005 season by taking home the track championship hardware. Criss scored four wins en route to the title but, more importantly, was a model of consistency as he recorded 14 top-5 finishes in his 15 starts. Completing the top-10 in the final standings were Criss' teammate Brian Mitrisin, Brad Pinkerton, Jim Brown, Eric Flander, Rick Brown, Matt Greiner, Rick VanDusseldorp, Mark Steinke and Brandon Bandstra.

In the USRA Hobby Stock Division, Colt Mather of Webster was crowned the 2005 track champion. The young gun recorded his eight wins over the course of the final 10 races of the season, as well as a pair of runner-up finishes in the fourth and fifth weeks of action. Rick Landgrebe, Randy Veldhuizen, Bobby Greene, Robert Rupprecht, Steve Allen, Chase Mitrisin, David Breuklander, Rodney Fairchild and Bill Gibson rounded out the top-10 in the final rankings.

Other honors doled out Saturday night included the Little Sizzler Award, which goes to the driver who starts out the year "on fire" and then sizzles. This year's honor went to USRA Hobby Stock driver Bobby Greene.

Hard Luck Awards went to Terry Walker (USRA Modified) and Tyler Ford (USRA Hobby Stock).

Rookie of the Year Awards went to (l-r) Toby Vandekamp (USRA Modified), Mark Steinke (USRA Stock Car) and Jason VanZomeren (USRA Hobby Stock).

Promoters Todd and Janet Staley also announced that they will return as promoters of the Oskaloosa, Iowa, facility in 2006. The 2006 season is tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 8, with the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series, along with Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. The USRA Weekly Racing Series season opener is slated for Wednesday, April 12.
