Davis, Hunt, Clancy score opening night wins at Lakeside Speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—It was a chilly night at Lakeside Speedway on Friday night for the season opener. Once the green flag waived for the first race the heat rose rather quickly.

It was a year ago that Kerry Davis rolled to a USRA Modified track championship at Lakeside Speedway. Friday night it appeared that Davis is still not done with winning races at Lakeside.

Joey Galloway and Davis brought the field to the start of the USRA Modified main event.

At the start of the race it was Galloway taking the lead but last year’s champ, Davis, was right on his heels and took the lead away on lap 2.

As Davis held down the top spot, a good battle brewed early for that second spot between Fuqua and Karrick while Galloway and Nic Bidinger tried to keep pace.

Davis stayed in command until the final three laps. Lapped traffic changed the complexion of the race as it allowed Fuqua to close in on the leader.

As the two drivers came to the white flag, Davis moved up on the track and Fuqua took to the bottom. Side by side they went but at the stripe it was Davis picking up the opening night victory.

Fuqua came home in the runner-up spot, thrid went to Karrick, fourth was Mark Schafman and rounding out the top five was Bidinger.

Heat race winners were Bidinger, Fuqua and Galloway.

Last year was a tough year for the former Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champion Chad Clancy.

After a year of mowing down competitors and collecting win after win, Clancy took a little break and had to learn a new chassis. He still picked up some wins in 2015, it just wasn’t at the pace of his 2014 season.

Friday night Clancy showed that he might be ready to go back to the dominating pace of 2014 as he won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature event.

A whopping 37 drivers checked in to compete on opening night.

Clancy, along with defending Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champion Andy Bryant, looked to be setting up an epic battle at the front of the feature as it got ready to kick off.

The green flag waved and it was Clancy getting the drop on the competition. Lap after lap he did not miss his marks and his Prime Racing Rage Chassis extended the lead lap after lap.

As Clancy raced to the finish, Bryant was able to chip away at the lead as the leader battled with lapped traffic.

It looked as if Bryant was going to have an opportunity on the final lap to make a run at Clancy, but Clancy would use the lapped traffic to his benefit down the back straight to gain enough cushion to secure his first win of the season.

Bryant settled for the runner-up spot, holding on to third was Mike Tanner, fourth was last year’s champ, Ed Noll, and coming home fifth was Gene Claxton.

Heat race winners were Tim Powell, Bryant, Noll, Tanner and Clancy. Steve McDowell won the "B" feature.

A few years ago Trevor Hunt was touted as the next big thing in area racing. The youngster showed signs of brilliance as he battled it out on tour with the USMTS.

Some time off from racing gave the youngster a chance to put things into perspective, and Friday night he debuted in both the Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods. After watching him race, it shows why everyone should keep an eye on him—he is a good race car driver.

For his first time in a Holley USRA Stock Car Hunt did a masterful job. He picked up the win in his heat race earlier in the night and it gained him a starting spot on the front row of the "A" main.

It was a year ago that Brett Heeter and Kevin Anderson dominated this division, and with the emergence of Hunt and other drivers this division could get even better than it already is.

Hunt took to an early lead. Smooth on and off the gas his lead built throughout the race. It looked like he was going to cruise to the easy victory until a late-race caution set up a green-white-checkered finish.

Heading to the restart, Hunt felt a lot of pressure from the two dominant drivers of 2015, but he jumped back out to the lead and worked his magic as both Heeter and Anderson worked hard to get by him.

Anderson was on the low side and Heeter jumped to the high side. The white flag waved and Hunt kept Anderson at bay behind him. The real threat came from Heeter as he made his high side run.

At the finish it was Hunt with a half-car-length lead over Heeter.

Anderson finished third, fourth went to Ryun and going from ninth to fth in the main event was Chad Walker.

Heat race winners were Heeter and Hunt.
