Schafman wins USRA Modified feature at Lakeside Speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Under budget can some times be an understatement. Friday night at Lakeside Speedway the USRA Modified feature was a battle of David vs. Goliath (if you want to believe that).

For years Mark Schafman has been running in the USRA Modified ranks at Lakeside Speedway. If you ask him or his crew they will tell you that they are doing everything they can to stay up front while on racing on a very tight budget.

At the start of the USRA Modified main event Schafman got out to the lead on the opening lap from his outside front row starting spot. He would have a host of racers looking to run him down as Tim Karrick, Nic Bidinger, Chad Lyle, Kerry Davis and Darron Fuqua were all on the move.

Schafman established a lead, but Lyle—a former multi-time champ in the division—was staying within striking distance. Lapped traffic came into play late with Schafman and Lyle as the race wore on. Soon after that Lyle would bring out a caution as his car would suffer a mechanical failure.

Schafman would retain the lead on the restart as he blasted back out in front and would hold on. On Friday night David would slay all the Goliaths that raced in the main event. Karrick put on a strong run to come home second, third went to Aaron Marrant, Davis held on to finish fourth and Fuqua rounded out the top five in the fifth position.

If you could pack any more excitement in the Holley USRA Stock Car main event it would be hard to believe. Friday night the first few laps would resemble a complete restart as the cars were two by two and sometimes four wide in the early stages.

Jayden Bears and Nate Barnes mixed it up at the front early, but as the race wore on Bears would slip back in the field. Barnes moved to the top spot but would have a familiar face, Brett Heeter, right behind him. Heeter, the 2015 champion, excels on a smooth dry slick race track that was provided on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway.

Lap 10 would see Heeter slip by Barnes for the lead. Heeter would not be challenged once he was in the top spot. Heeter pulled in his first win of the 2016 season. Barnes finished second, Trevor Hunt went from 15th to finish third, fourth was Kevin Anderson and Lucas Conley drove to a fifth-place finish.

J.C. Morton and Mike Tanner battled up front at the start of the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature. Morton would get the advantage and then flexed his muscle as he ran away from the competition.

Racing for position behind the leader was excited as three- and four-wide racing was evident all over the speedway. Andy Bryant, Shad Turner, Chad Clancy and Tanner were mixing it up. A couple of late race yellows would help out the competition.

Out in front it was all Morton on the restart. Morton would sprint to the win on the green, white, checkered restart finish. Morton is only the second different feature winner on the 2016 season to this point.

Clancy, the feature winner from Thursday night, drove from 13th to second, Tanner finished third, fourth went to a charging Trevor Hunt and rounding out the top five was Colten Stevens.
