Lucas Oil Speedway Weekly Series resumes Saturday with USRA B-Mods featured

Fresh off his first feature victory of the season, Springfield's J.C. Morton looks to build on his points lead Saturday night when the Ozark Golf Cars B-Mods headline the racing program at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Ozarks Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Night at the Races Presented by KOZL 27 will see the B-Mods running a special 25-lap feature paying $500 to win.

Round Five of the Budweiser Weekly Championship Series also finds the ALPS Food Store ULMA Late Models, the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds and the Carson's Corner NAPA Street Stocks in action.

Gates open at 5 p.m with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.

Morton became the fourth feature winner in four B-Mod events this season when he edged Steve Muilenburg by a car length on Saturday. Morton also has a third-place finish and two fourth places to open a 19-point lead over Lebanon's Kris Jackson as the championship chase begins to take shape.

"It felt good to finally get that monkey off our back," Morton said of his feature win. "Hopefully many more wins will follow.

"We tried some different set-ups since week one and we've kind of gone back to where we were a year ago, a year and a half ago when we were running good," Morton added. "Hopefully we'll keep clicking off these good finishes."

Morton said he's enjoyed racing up front with Jackson so often. Jackson has one win and a second-place so far and wound up fourth last Saturday after dueling side-by-side with Morton early in the feature.

"He races with a lot of respect. I think we have a mutual feeling there," Morton said of Jackson. "He left me plenty of room Saturday night to race side by side and didn't try pinching me. You're going to rub a little here and there, though not intentionally. But I feel that the respect is definitely there between us."

In the ULMA Late Model division, Marrant will be aiming for his fourth straight feature victory this week after edging Justin Russell by inches at the finish last Saturday.

Marrant, of Richmond, leads Nevada's Larry Ferris by 11 points with Tommy Cordray of Browning 23 behind and defending track champ Russell 32 back.

Bolivar's Jeff Cutshaw remains on top of the USRA Modified standings after his second-place Saturday to Eric Turner. Cutshaw is 27 points in front of Hermitage's Jason Pursley with Turner, also of Hermitage, 53 behind.

The biggest cushion for a division lead is in the Street Stocks, where Stoutland's Derek Brown is 59 clear of Buckhorn's David Hendrix. Brown had a three-race win streak snapped on Saturday, settling for a third-place finish behind his dad, Timothy Brown, in the feature.
