In the USRA Modified main event on Sunday, May 7, Joey Schaefer of Waterloo captured his first win at the Cresco Speedway.

CRESCO, Iowa -- The USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series continued at the Cresco Speedway Sunday night, May 7, with two repeat winners and three new faces making their way into victory lane.

In the USRA Hobby Stock main event, Mitch Hovden of Decorah raced from the eighth starting position to take his second straight win at the 4/10-mile semi-banked clay oval. Cresco's Chris Hovden took the runner-up spot, followed by Brandon Hare of Elma, Nick Schwebach of Caledonia, Minn., and Bill Meyer of Sumner.

Outlaw Hobby action saw outside front row starter Patty Fosaaen of Waukon take the checkers ahead of Protivin's Ben Moudry. Matt Jones of Waukon, Dillon Anderson of Decorah and polesitter Josh Ludeking of Decorah rounded out the top-5 finishers.

With their Cresco debut behind them, the USRA B-Modifieds took to the track with Oelwein's Brian Kunkle capturing his second victory in as many weeks. Jimmy Broszeit of Postville grabbed second, with Chris Fretheim of Decorah in third, Junior Boyer of Calmar fourth and Arlington's Chad Lerch fifth.

After capturing the opening night win on April 23, defending USRA Stock Car track champion Tom Schmitt of Independence accepted the Bud Back Row Challenge this week. After starting 16th, however, Schmitt was only able to muster a fifth-place finish. First to the finish line was polesitter Lynn Panos of Protivin, followed by Brian Gjere of Mabel, Minn., Decorah's Kevin Bidne and Tory Reicks of Waucoma. Next week the Bud Back Row Challenge grows to $600.

In the USRA Modified nightcap, Joey Schaefer of Waterloo captured his first win at Cresco as he held off defending track champ Ron Konkel of Caledonia, Minn. Polesitter Alan Mondus of Lakeville, Minn., finished third while Waterloo's Kevin Pittman was fourth. Chuck Stanton of New Hampton completed the top-5 finishers.

Next Sunday, May 14, gates will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 6:30 for Featherlite Night at the Cresco Speedway. General admission adult tickets are $9, Juniors (ages 13-18) & Seniors (62 and older) are $7, with kids 12 and under admitted FREE each night.
