Burgtorf takes two at Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway
Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., won both the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modified and Keith's Foods Late Model features at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway on Friday, May 12, 2006.
BLOOMFIELD, Iowa -- The fifth Fast Track Friday Night of the 2006 racing season was held with cloudy skies and cool temps, but the racing action was as hot as ever. The night was sponsored by Cantril Feed & Grain and Harris Distributing, with six classes of cars in action including the long-awaited return of the Keith's Foods Late Models to the fast 3/8-mile Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway.
The first feature of the evening was the Kollision Korner Hornets in action with Tom Irwin of Bloomfield taking the checkers for the second straight week. Irwin held off David Probasco of Moulton, who raced his way from the 10th spot to take second, with Andrew Hustead of Rutledge, Mo., taking third and Bloomfield driver Gene Irwin in fourth.
In the 15-lap feature for the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks, the action was red-flagged for Oskaloosa driver Steve Allen taking a nasty ride, flipping five times on the front stretch and coming to rest on his side in turn 1. Allen was able to get out under his own power, was checked out by the Davis County Ambulance crew and released, but his #3s machine suffered heavy damage. On the restart, Nathan Wood of Sigourney and Ray Lasser Jr. of Ottumwa led the field to the green with Wood taking the lead until lap 5 before Jim Walker of Mystic took the lead and never looked back, driving to victory lane for the first time in 2006. Wood took the second spot with Lasser in third and Jim Sulser of Centerville battled his way to fourth after being involved in a 10-car accident on lap 8.
In the USRA B-Modified feature, Chris Leathers topped a stellar field, finding the fast way around the Speedway by working the high side of the smooth track. Leathers took the race lead on lap 7 of the 15-lap event, coming from the fourth starting spot. Jeff Waterman and Tony Dunker battled for the second spot with Waterman in second and Dunker in third. Joe Hooper of Mendon, Ill., took fourth in the largest field for the new class in 2006 with 10 cars checked in for action.
The fourth feature of the night was the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modified feature going 20 laps with Jeremy Townsend of Bloomfield and Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa leading the field to the green flag. Blattler and Townsend battled for the lead before Blattler's night came to a end with a flat tire. Townsend took the lead until Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., grabbed the lead by working the high side of the track, and took home the victory. Townsend garnered the second spot with Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon in third after starting 11th and Casey Lancaster of Glenwood, Mo., taking the fourth spot.
One of the toughest features of the night was the Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Car feature event going 18 laps with 19 cars in action. Matt Greiner of Washington and T.J. Bainbridge of Eldon battled for the early race lead with the two drivers swapping the lead for the first four laps before Jim Lynch of Bloomfield found the high side of the Speedway along with Howard Gordon Jr. of Oskaloosa running the low side, which made for some three- and four-wide racing action. All four drivers, along with Jason Cook of Mt. Pleasant -- the winner of the last two main events at Bloomfield -- worked his magic from 10th to join the battle for the first, second and third positions. Lynch took the checkers with Cook in second ahead of his younger brother, Ryan Cook, in third and Matt Greiner in fourth.
The final feature of the night was the long-awaited return of the big-bodied cars of the Keith's Foods Late Model division. This was the first of four appearances at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway for the Late Models and they put on a thrilling show. Early race leader Andy Eckrich of Iowa City looked to have things wrapped up, but on lap 10 of the 20-lap event, Eckrich's machine made contact with the lapped car of Jeff Gerhardt of Nioda, Ill., causing heavy damage to both cars and ending the night for both drivers. Thad Trump of Kahoka, Mo., restarted as the leader, and the battle for the win was on. Trump had to deal with Jody Wood of Donnellson and Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., -- all of whom wanted the $1,000 payday and the win. The three drivers battled for the win with Burgtorf taking the lead by working the high side of the Speedway with Wood taking second, followed by Justin Reed of Quincy, Ill., and Trump slipping back to fourth. This was a very exciting race for the first appearance of the Keith's Foods Late Models and look forward to their next appearance on Friday, June 2.
Next week's line-up will see the Mid America 305 Winged Sprints return for round 2 of the 2006 campaign, plus a full program of the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring the Spilman Auto Parts Modifieds, Hougland's Repair Shop Stock Cars, B-Mods, Kirkland Auto Hobby Stocks and Kollision Korner Hornets.
