Alan Mondus celebrates in victory lane with his father, Scott, after winning Sunday's USRA Modified feature at the Cresco Speedway.

CRESCO, Iowa -- The USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series continued with a strong field and some thrilling finishes Sunday at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa.

In Outlaw Hobby action, Decorah's Dillon Anderson took the feature win, followed by a trio of Waukon drivers: Matt Jones, Kevin Leiran and Austin Curtin. Ben Moudry of Protivin rounded out the top five finishers. Heat race wins went to Jason Borsheim of Mabel, Minn., and Leiran.

The USRA Hobby Stock main event saw Chris Hovden inherit the lead when the lead car of Mitch Hovden and the second-place runner were caught up in a crash with lapped traffic while racing to the white flag. Chris Hovden scored the first-place paycheck, with Brandon Hare of Elma in second, Bill Meyer of Sumner third, David Lickteig of Cresco fourth and Decorah's Katie Larson fifth. Heat race checkers waved for Lickteig and Hare.

In their inaugural season at Cresco, the USRA B-Modified division continues to grow. A new winner emerged this week as Jeremy LaPlant of Elgin scored the feature win ahead of runner-up Brian Schrage of Cresco. Third went to Junior Boyer of Calmar, while Postville's Jimmy Broszeit finished fourth and Raymond Lundry of Maynard completed the top five across the finish line. Heat wins were taken by two-time winner Brian Kunkle of Oelwein and Boyer.

Brian Gjere of Mabel, Minn., fended off the challenges by Tom Schmitt of Independence to score the USRA Stock Car main event victory. Jason Schlangen of Cresco grabbed the third spot, while Tory Reicks of Waucoma and Kevin Bidne of Decorah rounded out the top five. Bidne and Gjere also recorded heat race wins earlier in the evening.

A tough bunch of USRA Modifieds rolled onto the track for the Sunday nightcap with Shawn Ryan of Waterloo on the pole and Alan Mondus of Lakeville, Minn., to his outside. At the drop of the green flag, Mondus put his machine on the cushion and, despite several caution flags, led the main event wire to wire for his career-first USRA Modified triumph. Opening night winner Darrin Walch of Postville took home the runner-up prize, with Waterloo's Kevin Pittman finishing third. Fourth went to Dan Bohr of Decorah. Joey Schaefer of Waterloo, who won two weeks ago, completed the top five. Decorah's Todd Ihde and Keith Pittman were the heat race winners.

Next Sunday, May 28, the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series continues at the Cresco Speedway featuring USRA Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods, Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbies. Gates will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 6:30. General admission adult tickets are $9, Juniors (ages 13-18) & Seniors (62 and older) are $7, with kids 12 and under admitted FREE each night.

The Cresco Speedway is located 0.2 miles north of SR 9 on SW 7th (at the Howard County Fairgrounds). For more information call the track hotline at (563) 547-3400.
