First-time winners highlight Pink-Out Night at Deer Creek Speedway

Saturday’s program at the Deer Creek Speedway featured Pink-Out Night with Join The Journey to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. The show was presented by Rochester Golf Carts, Ulven’s Hardware, BK Millright, Adams Graphix, First Supply and Blake Adams Racing.

Mother Nature put a big crimp in the start time when rains came late in the afternoon. But the track prep crew got after it when the rains ceased and got the track back in shape. During the delay the crowd was kept entertained with a hula hoop contest, trike races a live auction and even a marriage proposal. The event got started at 8:20 p.m. with the unfinished business of four make up features left over from last Saturday.

Dustin Kruse and Jett Sorensen led the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods to the green for their make-up feature. Kruse took off from the pole to lead with J.T. Wasmund quickly to second. Brandon Hare passed Jett Sorensen for third while Kruse pulled away.

This race also went green to checkers without a yellow flag on a hammer-down racetrack. Kruse scooted to his first win of the season followed by Wasmund in second. Hare finished in third with Trevor Fecht and Jim Chisholm in the top five.

Dustin Kruse won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod make-up feature.

Jason Cummins took off from row one of the USRA Modified make-up main event. The race was slowed by several minor caution flags that kept Dustin Sorensen and Keith Foss close to Cummins. Cummins would hold the lead and fend off a couple of looks from Sorensen.

Sorensen then had to deal with Foss for second and Cummins extended his lead. Cummins crossed the finish line first with Sorensen in second. Foss ran in third as J.D. Auringer took fourth and Greg Pfeifer Jr. finished fifth.

Jason Cummins won the USRA Modified make-up feature.

With the show from the previous week complete, this week’s event got underway at 9:20 with 111 cars ready to tackle the speedway. Sixteen qualifying races took place and the first feature event rolled on to the track at 10:55.

The five feature winners were going to receive a challenge in the Tralo Companies victory lane. They were challenged to do push-ups to raise money for Join The Journey. Many local businesses and individuals donated $1 for every push-up the feature winners could do.

Kadden Kath and J.T. Wasmund raced for the lead in the early stages of the 18-lap Out-Pace USRA B-Mod main event. On lap two several cars got sideways on the front-stretch and a huge crash ensued. It was a vicious hard crash that flipped Kruse on his roof and involved at least 10 cars. The red flag was brought out and, fortunately, all drivers were uninjured in the 21-minute red flag period.

Andrew Bleess jumped to the lead when the race restarted with Wasmund and Kath in pursuit. Bleess led the rest of the way to score his first career win. Bleess donated $100 to Join The Journey in victory lane. Bleess also received a $200 bonus from a secret donor. Wasmund ran second with Chisholm up to third. Hare was fourth and Kyle Kath raced to fifth.

Andrew Bleess won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.

Cummins started on the pole of the 25-lap USRA Modified feature. Most thought Cummins was a shoe-in for the win as he won earlier in the night from row one. It was just a matter of how many push-ups could he do in victory lane. Well, not so fast, the race is 25 laps. Cummins dominated the first eight laps until a flat tire ended his run on a lap nine caution.

Foss inherited the lead with Sorensen and Brad Waits behind him. They charged three wide for the lead on the restart with Sorensen now in the lead and Waits in second on lap 10. Sorensen and Waits put on a great show up front when Sorensen used the low line and Waits went topside.

They ran close until Waits stole the lead on lap 22. Waits led the final three circuits for his first win of the season and his first in almost two seasons at Deer Creek. Spencer Ihrke then did 24 push-ups—which is Waits’ car number—for Join The Journey. Sorensen held on to second with Foss third, Adam Hensel in fourth and Ryan Ruter fifth.

Brad Waits won the USRA Modified feature.

The final checkered flag fell at approximately 12:40 a.m.
