Bumper Jones won the USRA Modified feature.

More than 3,000 fans gathered for the annual Mesilla Valley Transportation Night at the Southern New Mexico Speedway as we celebrated 241 years of independence Saturday with a packed house, packed pit area and fireworks in the sky to cap off a fantastic evening.

The Holley USRA Stock Cars had a strong car count as 18 showed up for battle. The 20-lap feature started with Mark Smith and Troy Miller leading the field to the green. Smith led the opening four laps until Victor Colobrio, who started eighth, battled for the lead and found his way around Smith to lead lap five. Colobrio enjoyed a comfortable lead until a caution flew on lap nine. After the restart, 17th-starting Jaime Torres grabbed the lead and left the field behind.

A late caution flew to make for a green-white-checkered finish, but Torres had the pedal to the floor board as won from the last starting spot. Colorbio, Donavon Flores, Nathan Smith and Troy Miller rounded out the top five.

The USRA Modifieds brought it to the house tonight as 36 cars checked in representing the Lone Star State, Grand Canyon State and the Land of Enchantment. Fito Gallardo came into the main event with confidence after winning the Late Model feature earlier, and started on the pole with Duncan, Ariz., racer Terry Tipton on the outside of row one.

At the start, Gallardo had Tipton challenging him for the lead but Gallardo found the top and took off with Tipton following his tire tracks. Bumper Jones, who started sixth, was up to third on lap two. A red flag would followed as a five-car pile-up occurred after Dusty Riggs spun, collecting Noah Hollingshead, Tom Georges, Butch Reid Jr. and Dustin Smith in corner four.

On the restart, Gallardo led the way with Jones working his way to second. Jones slide-jobbed Gallardo in turns one and two, but Gallardo answered with a good crossover move and regained the lead. Jones threw another slide job in three and four, but Gallardo regained the spot with another crossover move. Jones finally made the pass with seven laps complete, and lapped traffic came into play four laps later but a caution flew.

Trying to keep his four-race win streak alive, Jones took off on the restart with Fito Gallardo second and Jake Gallardo in third. Jake Gallardo jumped to second, leaving his dad behind and chasing Jones. Jake Gallardo showed Jones some sheet metal and took the lead into turn three, but Jones got it back when a caution flew for Royal Jones who went spinning multiple times after losing his right rear tire.

Jones had a better restart than Jake Gallardo with an outstanding race between the two as they raced side by side. Jake Gallardo came close using the top, but Jones won again in a nail-biter that kept his streak alive, and kept the $1,000 bounty on his head safe for another week.

Behind Jones and Jake Gallardo, Jimmy Ray came home third with 21st-starting Zane DeVilbiss finishing fourth and 17th-starting Jared Perez completing the top five.
