Drake takes down O'Reilly MLRA Late Model checkers at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- Keith's Foods presented the O'Reilly MLRA Late Models at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, with Scott Drake of Webb City, MO going home with the victory. Also claiming feature wins on the evening were Mark Burgtorf (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Matt Greiner (USRA Stock Cars), Jeff Waterman (Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Nathan Wood (USRA Hobby Stocks), Rodger Dresden (Outlaw Hobbies) and Dennis Schulte (Hornets).

The first feature of the night was the 15-lapper for Outlaw Hobbies, with Brian Clark and Tim Pettibone drawing the front row for the event. Clark took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1. Clark would hold the top spot until lap 6, when Rodger Dresden jumped to his outside to grab the lead. Dresden then held on for the final nine laps to claim his third win of 2006 at the speedway. Clark won the battle for second, with Michael St. Clair coming in a close third, Brian Howerton was fourth, with Brandon Symmonds rounding out the top five. Beau Taylor, St. Clair and Jeff Soper picked up the heat race wins.

Up next was the 15-lap USRA Stock Car feature, with Troy Alexander and Jeremy Hamlin leading the field to the drop of the green. Alexander would jump out into the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 6, when Matt Greiner slipped under him to take over the top spot. Greiner would then hold off a late charge from Alexander to pick up his fifth win of the season at the track. Ryan Cook came home third, Jason Cook was fourth, with Hamlin holding on for fifth. Heat race winners were Alexander and R. Cook.

Andrew Hustead and Dennis Schulte drew the front row for the 10-lap Hornet feature, with Schulte moving out front on the drop of the green flag. Dennis would hold off Tyler Schulte to lead all ten laps and claim his first win of the season at the speedway. Brent Hartley came out on top for the battle for third over Hustead, with Lew Aikman coming home in fifth. Dennis made it a clean sweep, as he picked up the heat race win.

The 12-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature was next to take to the speedway, with Jason VanZomeren and Bill Gibson making up the front row. Gibson would grab the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 3, when Nathan Wood, who started sixth, slipped under him for the top spot. Wood then pulled away over the final six laps to pick up his tenth win of 2006 at the track. Gibson would finish in second, Mike Shelton held off Robby Sands for third, with VanZomeren rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Wood and Robby Sands.

Brandon Savage and Jeff Waterman took the field to the drop of green flag in the 15-lap Advance Trading USRA B-Modified feature. Waterman would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1, with Michael Browning, Jim Gillenwater and Tony Dunker battling for second. Waterman then went on to lead all 15 laps to pick up his first feature win of the season at the speedway. Browning won the battle for second, Gillenwater was third, Dunker recovered from a lap 2 penalty to finish in fourth, with Savage holding on for fifth. Savage and Gillenwater claimed heat race wins.

Up next was the 18-lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modified feature, with Lynn Monroe and Michael Long drawing the front row for the event. Long took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 6, when Mark Burgtorf, who started eighth, charged up for the top spot. Burgtorf then pulled away over the final 13 laps to claim his fourth win of the season at the track. Martin Bennett came home second, Mike Bennett was third, Ryan Meyer was fourth, with Long holding on for fifth. Heat race winners were Burgtorf and Mike Bennett.

The final feature of the night was the 30-lap O'Reilly MLRA Late Models presented by Keith's Food. Alan Vaughn and Andy Eckrich were on the front row for the event, with Eckrich grabbing the lead on lap 1. Eckrich would hold the top spot until lap 5, when Scott Drake jumped to his outside for the lead. Drake and Eckrich would battle for the lead until a caution on lap 18. On the restart, Drake once again moved out into the lead and now had Sonny Findling behind him in second. Drake would hold on over the final 12 laps to claim his second O'Reilly MLRA Late Model win in a row. Findling held on for second, Eckrich was third, Matt Furman was fourth, with series points leader Al Purkey coming home in fifth. Vaughn, Eckrich, Findling and Drake picked up the heat race wins, while Jason Bodenhamer won the semi.

Next Saturday, Aug. 19, Slayton Polaris and Helena Chemical present the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring the Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, Advance Trading USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobbies and Hornets. Admission is $10 for adults $10, kids ages 6 to 12 are just $3 and children 5 & under get in for FREE. Pit passes are $20. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 6:30.
