Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points battles heat up as end draws near

Just a handful of events remain in this year’s Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points battles, and titles are up for grabs in nearly every division.

In the USRA Modified division, Jason Cummins of New Richland, Minn., holds the top spot over C.A. Nix of Lawton, Okla., and Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., who raced against Cummins every Saturday night at the Deer Creek Speedway, followed by Ryan Middaugh of Fulton, Mo., and Trevor Latham of Rogers, Ark.

Cummins, who also won the title in 2010, has registered 20 main event wins as he looks to keep the trophy in the Gopher State, following Lucas Schott’s championship in 2016. Another Minnesota racer, Brad Waits, is currently the only two-time USRA Modified national champ since national points were awarded beginning in 2005.

Decorah, Iowa’s Mitch Hovden is the most decorated driver in USRA history. Gunning for his third staright and fifth overall Holley USRA Stock Car national championship, Hovden’s margin of error shrunk this past weekend when Elijah Zevenbergen Ocheyeden, Iowa, scored a win and a runner-up finish at the Summit USRA Nationals.

Brett Heeter of Kansas City, Kan., lurks in third on the strength of his 20 feature wins this season while Jaime Torres of Las Cruces, N.M., and another 20-time winner, Dean Wray of Jamesport, Mo., are fourth and fifth.

Last year’s Summit USRA Nationals had a major impact on the points battle in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods, and last week’s event at the I-35 Speedway helped propel Ryan Gillmore of Springfield, Mo., into the points lead over 2015 national champ Andy Bryant of Fort Scott, Kan.

Dan Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, who sat atop the standings one week ago, is now third but not far behind the top two. Jake Richards of Lansing, Kan., is fourth and Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo., holds down the fifth spot.

Matt Jones racked up three straight Out-Pace USRA B-Mod ctitles from the 2007 to 2009, but Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., matched that feat with his third straight USRA Hobby Stock national championship last year. This year, Gulbradnson is once again in the driver’s seat as he looks to become the first-ever USRA driver to win four straight crowns.

Nashua, Iowa’s Matt White picked up his ninth feature win during last week’s Summit USRA Nationals to jump into second place while Brady Link of Waukon, Iowa, sits third with a division-best 12 wins under his belt this season. Chad Lonneman of Adrian, Minn., and Steve Larson of Decorah, Iowa, are fourth and fifth, respectively.

In their first season as a USRA-sanctioned division, the USRA Tuners have been a steadily growing class with three race tracks—Fayette County Speedway, Mason City Motor Speedway and Nobles County Speedway—adding the division to their weekly programs.

With no more events on those track schedules, the USRA Tuner nationals points will see Kyle Balik of Fort Atchison, Iowa, fending off his brother Mitch Balik for the title. Steve Lane, Dylan Clinton and Ryan Bryant round out the top five.

Drivers competing in a USRA-sanctioned event are eligible to earn national and track points at the racetrack where the points were earned for that class. National points will be awarded to each driver based on his/her best twenty (20) points nights in class from Jan. 7 through Oct. 29. Track points may include all events at that racetrack.

Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champions and final points will be announced the first week of November after final results have been submitted and audited.
