Shryock, Schmitt, Evans, Gibson, Taylor, Kibbe top opening night of Pizza Hut Memphis Fall Nationals

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The first night of the 2nd Annual Pizza Hut Memphis Fall Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway was a little cold, but the racing action was hot. Drivers were battling for the top six transfer spots for the inside rows of Saturday's main events. Topping night one qualifying was Kelly Shryock (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Tom Schmitt (USRA Stock Cars), Jack Evans Jr. (Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Bill Gibson (USRA Hobby Stocks), Beau Taylor (Outlaw Hobbies) and Ronald Kibbe (Hornets).
 
Kibbe and and Andrew Hustead drew the front row for the 10-lap Hornet feature, with Kibbe grabbing the advantage on the drop of the green flag. Kibbe would go on to lead all 10 laps to pick up the win. Chuck Fullenkamp was second, Hustead settled for third, J.D. Murphy was fourth, Bill O'Haver was fifth, with Ethan Hustead rounding out the sixth and final qualifying spot for Saturdays main event. Kibbe also claimed the heat race win.
 
Next up was the 12-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Jason McDaniel and Mike Leffler on the front row. McDaniel and Leffler battled side-by-side for the top spot for the first three laps, before Gibson slipped by for the lead. Gibson then held off a late challenge from McDaniel to claim victory. Leffler held on for third, Bob Lynch was fourth, Steve Allen was fifth, with Jason VanZomeren taking the sixth and final transfer spot. The heat race win went to McDaniel.
 
Brett Moffitt and Jim Gillenwater drew the front row for the 15-lap Advance Trading USRA B-Modified feature. But it was third place starter Jack Evans Jr. taking the lead on the drop of the green flag. Evans went on to lead all fifteen laps and held off Ryan Gustin, who came from the back after an early crash, to claim the feature win. Joe Hooper came from 19th to finish in third, fourth went to Jeff Waterman, who started 13th. Brandon Savage came from the rear after a late crash to finish in fifth, with Larry Winn coming home in the final transfer spot. Wyatt Lantz, Evans and Tony Dunker picked up the heat race wins, while Hooper won the semi.
 
The 15-lap USRA Stock Car feature had Toby Johnson and Matt Greiner on the front row, with Greiner taking the early lead. Greiner and Tom Schmitt battled side-by-side for the top spot until Schmitt took comand on lap 4. Schmitt then went on to pick up the win, with Greiner in second. Jason Cook came from 11th to finish in third, Mike Van Genderen started 15th to finish in fourth, Donovan Lodge edged out Ryan Cook on the final lap for fifth, with Ryan holding on for the final transfer spot. Heat race winners were Schmitt, Johnson and Greiner.
 
Jim Lynch and Adam Birck led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 15-lap Outlaw Hobby feature, but it was fourth-place starter Beau Taylor taking the lead on lap 1. Taylor, the 2006 track champion at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, went on to lead all 15 laps to claim the win. John Oliver Jr. came from ninth to finish in second, Rodger Dresden was third, Doug Fenton was fourth, Tony Becerra came from 14th to finish in fifth, with Jeff Soper rounding out the final qualifying spot. Taylor, Derek Reimer and Oliver each picked up a heat race win.
 
The final feature of the night was the 20-lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds, with Zack VanderBeek and Mike Hejna drawing the front row. VanderBeek took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. VanderBeek led the field until lap 12 when Kelly Shryock, who started 12th, slipped by for the lead. The seven-time defending O'Reilly USMTS national champ went on to lead the final eight laps to pick up the win. VanderBeek was second, Hejna was third, Mark Burgtorf came from 22nd to finish in fourth. Mark Noble was fifth, with Bruce Hanford taking the sixth and final transfer spot. Heat race winners were Shryock, Gary Blackburn Jr., Noble and Al Hejna, while Tony Fraise claimed victory in the semi.
 
Qualifying races for the Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds, USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobby Stocks and Hornets continues tonight. Also joining the card, will be the Keith's Foods Late Models competing for $2,000 to win. Action will begin tonight at 6 p.m. with hot laps and racing at 6:30.
