The 11th Annual Danny Martinez Jr. Memorial at the Tri-State Speedway was a great way to finally get back to racing after not racing for four weeks due to Mother Nature and her spring rains. With 91 entries from Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and North Dakota, it was one great night of racing for the fans who attended.

A warmer-than-expected 85 degrees greeted race fans Saturday evening with a slight breeze and zero threats of rain. As has come to be expected from the superb preparation, the track was wide and smooth when hot laps started and turned to “black ice” by the features which provided racing grooves form bottom to top with at least three to four grooves.

The pre-race ceremonies started at 7 p.m. with a memorial reading by track announcer Rob Nugent about the late Danny Martinez Jr. During the national anthem, police vehicles led a memorial parade lap honoring their fallen brother. After the national anthem was complete, police vehicles turned on their sirens and made another fast lap around the track as an added tribute to Martinez, who was also a racer at Tri-State Speedway.

The first race on the track after intermission was the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod "B" feature that saw Zane Hunter of Alma, Ark., take the checkers over Roy Long of Stilwell and Beau Nelson of Hackett, Ark. Up next was the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod "A" feature where Dean Green of Siloam Springs, Ark., took home the win. Checotah's Daniel Tarkington was second over young Drake Long of Stilwell.

The USRA Modifieds took to the high banks last for their "A" feature. Mike Hansen of Dickinson, N.D., crossed the line first for the winner’s trophy over Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., as Chad Wheeler of Muskogee finished in third.

The next event for Tri-State Speedway will be the inaugural Steel Horse Shootout featuring flat track motorcycle racing on Friday, May 4, followed by the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup for the United States Modified Touring Series on Saturday, May 5. We will see you soon!
