Dustin Smith held off 2017 track champion Bumper Jones on the final quarter of the USRA Modified main event to pick up an historic first win of his career Satruday night at the Southern New Mexico Speedway.

With a roaring 26-car field, Todd Harper set the front row of the 30-lap feature with Roger Owens, but Butch Reid Jr. led the opening round with Carlos Ahumada Jr. right behind.

Ahumada showed the knowledge he gained from running with the USMTS this winter and early spring, leading until Fito Gallardo got around on lap eight.

The top of the race track had marbles, making it hard to manage a good run on the outside. Smith ran to second with Ahumada and Jones battling racing hard for third.

A caution flew on lap 12 for Gallardo—the second to suffer that fate as his son, Jake, also blew his engine in his heat race.

Smith took charge on the restart, holding his ground on the bottom while Jones got around Ahumada for second and began catching Smith on the bottom.

With Smith on lock down on the bottom, Jones slid up to use the top and cleaned enough marbles off to get some speed off of turn four, eventually getting to the lead, but the caution flew and Smith got a good break and led the final five laps while holding off Jones.

Donavon Flores picked up the Holley USRA Stock Car win.
