Nobles County Speedway wins to Lund, Christensen, Luinenburg, Coopman

Saturday night at the Nobles County Speedway, passing was a challenge in the Holley USRA Stock Car feature as the leaders hugged the bottom of the track. Spenser Kalass used the outside to regain the point after starting on the pole. However, he and Trent Schroeder would get together while fighting for the top spot. The call went against Kalass.

Curt Lund moved up from sixth to second to take a stab at Schroeder’s lead which included a couple of bump-and-run attempts. With two laps to go, Lund’s pestering finally got the best of Schroeder resulting in Lund’s first win at NCS in his first visit of 2018. Rich Gregoire rode Lund’s coat tails to finish second ahead of Schroeder.

Miah Christensen has been disappointed with his motor since the start of the season but you wouldn’t know it from his three nights at NCS which have culminated in two Out-Pace USRA B-Mod wins. Christensen and Devon Schlumbohm, both from Sioux Falls, S.D., waged an epic battle for the lead with several side-by-side laps, Christensen on the inside and Schlumbohm on the cushion.

By race’s end, Christensen had a decent lead, but a caution flag on the final lap brought on the possibility of a new ending. Schlumbohm went right back to the high side for the green-white-checkered finish. But Christensen and his "slightly less than 100 percent" motor outraced the rest of the field to the finish. Schlumbohm held on for second. Meanwhile, Christensen’s son, Cole, took advantage of the final restart to get by a couple of cars to take third after starting eighth.

Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks keep filling the pits as 27 drivers signed in for duty. "B" feature action sent four very good cars into the "A" feature with Dustin Gulbrandson, Tyler Pospisil, Tyler Schlumbohm and Dan Strandberg filling the final two rows.

Austin Jahnz grabbed the lead over Nick Schilling and Ernie Dailey early while cars were moving up through the field including 11th-starting Justin Luinenberg. The aforementioned hard-charger Schlumbohm, passed 13 cars to finish sixth. Gulbrandson came from 17th to eighth.

Strandberg passed 10 cars in taking 10th. But it was Luinenberg who matched that total, making Jahnz his final pass en route to the checkered flag. Luinenberg’s win was his first of the season at NCS. Gulbrandson holds a 10-point advantage over Jahnz atop the point standings.

Afterhour Graphics, Tees and More USRA Tuner division leader Nate Coopman of Mankato grabbed his first win at NCS after getting by front row starters Gary Grabill and Dan Jensen. David Bates was impressive in his season debut, coming from seventh to second. Coopman has built a 44-point lead over Jensen just three weeks into the season.

A total of 90 cars filled the pits Saturday night while fans were treated to free admission on Salute to Ag Night. Nobles County Speedway would like to thank the Nobles County Corn & Soybean Growers Association, New Vision Coop, the Nobles County Fair Association, Murray County Corn & Soybean Growers Association, Nobles County Farm Bureau, Nobles County Dairy Association, Nobles & Rock County Cattlemens Association and JBS for their efforts in making Salute to Ag Night a huge success.

All USRA divisions race this Saturday, June 23, along with A-Mods and NCS Sportsman. Hot laps are scheduled for 7 p.m. See www.noblescountyspeedway.com or NCS’s Facebook page for more information.
