Mondus holds off Wetzstein for Chateau Raceway triumph

LANSING, Minn. - Mother Nature did a nice job this week of setting things up for a great second week of racing at Husqvarna-sponsored Chateau Raceway in Lansing. Some nice rains during the week helped keep the track easily workable and a partly sunny Friday made for a perfect spring night for racing. The rising temperatures over a week ago also lead to a rising car count and a good turn out of fans for more exciting "Thunder in the Dirt."

Friday night was also one of several Kids-R-Free Nights the track has sprinkled through the schedule as part of its season long "Kids Promotions." Next weeks promotion for the Kids will require them to be at the track early. Sometime after the 6:45 driver draw cut off and pit meeting the track will load all interested youngsters onto large wagons and take them for a trip though the pits. It will be an opportunity for the youngsters to see all the drivers and crews going through there pre-race routines of prepping there cars.

This week after all the kids and adults all got settled into there seats they were treated to some really fine racing in all six classes with the track in great shape and the drivers able to run at some great speeds.

The USRA Modifieds sponsored by Noble RV featured a tight two-car battle in their main event. Alan Mondus of Lakeville took advantage of a front row starting spot to jump out to the early lead. Steve Wetzstein of West Concord started a row further back and took a few laps to pull himself up to second.

By the time he got there Mondus had stretched out a pretty good lead but that went away when the race's first caution flag came out. On lap five Larry Nelson of Hartland lost out in a three wide battle coming out of turn two and ended up getting squeezed into the wall. Larry got out of his car rather slowly and after a brief visit with the ambulance crew he jumped on a four wheeler for a ride back to his trailer.

On the restart the top two quickly pulled away from the rest of the field with Steve shadowing Alan but unable to find a line to make a move to the front. Another caution on lap fifteen slowed the field again when Jacob Dahle of Morristown ended up in the wall, again after contact out of turn two with another car.

A final restart did nothing to improve Wetzsteins ability to get around Mondus and Alan held on for his first feature win of the 2007 season.

Josh Mattic of Austin outdueled Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie for third as the two traded positions several times over the races final laps providing some excitement of there own. The nights heat winners for the class were Wetzstein and Dahle.
