Bakken back in Cresco winners circle

CRESCO, Iowa - Brad Bakken of Garner captured his second straight USRA Modified feature win Friday at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, during racing action in the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series. Bakken, who started sixth, bested defending track champion Kevin Pittman of Waterloo for the second straight week as well. Keith Pittman and Shawn Ryan finished third and fourth, respectively, to give Waterloo pilots three of the top five slots. Michael Darnall of West Union finished fifth.

In USRA Stock Car action, defending track champion Tom Schmitt of Independence broke into victory lane for the first time this season. Schmitt held off current points leader Kurt Krauskopf of Decorah for the win, with Waucoma's Tory Reicks finishing third. Lynn Panos of Protivin was fourth and Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Raymond Lundy of Maynard used his outside front row starting spot to his advantage and powered to his second win of the season in the USRA B-Mod ranks. Terry Quam of Decorah pocketed the runner-up paycheck, Tim Heins of Elkader was third, Elgin's Jeremy LePlant took fourth and Bruce Hovey of Decorah claimed fifth at the finish line.

After starting seventh and eighth in the main event, Brandon Hare of Elma and Cresco's Chris Hovden waged a spirited battle in the USRA Hobby Stock class, with Hare claiming his second checkered flag of 2007 to extend his points lead. Steve Holthaus of Cresco finished third, with Brad Darling of Mable, Minn., fourth and Bernie Adams of Stacyville in fifth.

Cody Cook of Decorah garnered the win in the Outlaw Hobby class to become the third different winner in three races this season. Fellow Decorah driver Mitch Hovden grabbed the runner-up finish, followed by Austin Curtin of Waukon, Neil Thesing of Oakdale, Minn., and Carl Colsch of Eitzen, Minn.

The Mighty Howard County Fairgrounds roar back to life next Friday, June 1, as CPU/i wireless presents the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbys. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with hot laps at 7:15 and racing getting underway at 7:30.
