Saturday races become impromtu family affair at Nobles County Speedway

As the 2018 racing season has unfolded Nobles County Speedway, fans have been witnessing the progression of a new crop of racers—the next generation, if you will.

Just a week ago, Tyler Bradley, son of Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock racer Jason Bradley, earned his first Sportsman victory but Saturday’s Kibble Equipment Night really put the spotlight on the next generation.

Cole Christensen, son of Out-Pace USRA B-Mod ace Miah Christensen who has three feature wins in 2018, drew the third starting position for the $800-to-win Out-Pace USRA B-Mod special.

Cole Christensen smartly worked past Tyler Johnson and Curt Ahlers to take the lead which he held for several laps until he and Johnson reached back markers.

The caution flew after Alissa Palsrock spun in front of Johnson, resulting in contact. Johnson continued in second upon the restart.

Christensen and Johnson again reached slower traffic. This time Christensen and Palsrock made wheel contact with Christensen’s left rear getting lifted into the air. He continued with little to no effect and on to his first feature win. The young teenager was greeted first in victory lane by his proud father and a congratulatory Johnson.

The impromptu family night began when Jaeden Strandberg led the entire Sybesma Graphics Sportsman feature while his father, Dan Strandberg, was watching the race just off turn 4 and seated in his race car as the polesitter for the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock feature. He jumped out of his car after the checkers fell and ran to victory lane to congratulate his son.

As if you couldn’t predict the next chapter of this report, Dan Strandberg hopped back into his car and proceeded to lead every lap of the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock main event. Strandberg locked down the bottom of the track with Tyler Pospisil chasing his bumper. Justin Luinenburg, who started seventh, was one of just a couple of drivers to try a higher line. He moved from fifth to third, where he finished, after using the outside.

Strandberg, the defending track champion and 2011 Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock national champ, earned his first win of the season with many of the NCS crowd cheering their approval of the rare back-to-back, father-son feature wins.

Jon DeBoer added to the night’s excitement as the Holley USRA Stock Car winner. DeBoer just missed out on a win a week ago after a caution flag and restart allowed Luke Sathoff to scoot by for a win.

This week, Sathoff tried to sneak past Dylan Fitzpatrick’s inside late in the race. The two cars made contact and the loss of momentum for the drivers ended up giving DeBoer a full straight-away lead which he took right through the finish line.

The win was DeBoer’s first.

Scott Espey had a little luck on his side as a last-lap pass sent him to victory lane at the end of the USRA Tuner feature. Thad Gunnink had issues in the final turns, allowing Espey to motor past the leader out of turn 4.

Espey’s win was his second. He now has a commanding 168-point lead over Dan Jensen.
