Chateau Raceway checkers wave for Waits

LANSING, Minn. - It was a perfect night for racing Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Powered by Husqvarna. After a week off last week because of rain the drivers were ready for some action. Add that to the fact that another week's worth of light rain soaked into the track assuring a tacky-fast track, things were set up for a night of excitement.

There were a few extra cautions to the night but overall plenty of fast exciting action. Three of the six classes in fact had there season best times recorded and one of those just missed on setting the new track record for speed. Brad Waits of Zumbrota, making his first appearance of the season in the Noble RV USRA Modifieds came within five-hundreths of a second of setting a new standard for speed at the track. Waits' fast time in his heat win was 15.909 seconds, just a shade under the time set by Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie last year which was 15.861.

Waits was so dominating on the night that he scored a sweep with wins in both his heat and in the feature. In the feature, which started 18 cars, it took him just eight laps to start lapping cars and he put six of them down a lap before the first caution flew at lap 12. Despite his dominating performance up front there was plenty of good action back thru the field, Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie came home second after starting on the outside of the front row while Tyler Clark of Rochster came from row three up to third at the end out dueling Steve Wetzsten of West Concord.

A pair of drivers who started together on row four swapped spots several times before Steve Arpin of Fort Francis Ontario Canada won out over Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie for fifth.

The other heat winners were Arpin and Greg Jensen of Albert Lea. Jensen's win was his first of the season and was backing that finish up with a pretty good run in the feature where he had been running top five for much of the race before mechanical problems ended his night with flames coming out from under the hood of his car with just two laps remaining.

Next Friday night will be the 10th Annual Mike Guttormson Memorial. The race has been postponed by rain twice and the $1,000-to-win feature money is just waiting for the opportunity to be awarded to the winner of the Noble RV USRA Modified main event. The track will also run the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Affordable Portable WISSOTA Street Stocks, and the Albert Lea Pizza Ranch Pure Stocks. The S & S Auto Salvage Hornets and the Triple J Disposal" Classic Dwarf Cars will have the night off. Race time is set for 7:30.
