Nevada's Justin Pike made some very good decisions while competing in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod 20-lap feature Saturday at the Springfield Raceway, and those took him to victory lane Saturday night as leaders James Thompson and Jackie Dalton were both involved in an incident in lapped traffic.

Pike netted a $400 payday in grabbing his first ever Springfield victory while nipping hard-charging Shawn Duncan at the line in the final lap.

Thompson got the jump on the start over polesitter Kelly Beemer while two- and three-wide racing kept everyone wondering what would happen. A couple of short cautions for single car spins kept the already tight pack even closer.

On lap 8, reigning track champion Dalton had worked his way into second place and was closing quickly on Thompson with both running the top lane as Pike had broken away into third place but decided to run through the middle groove.

Things changed quickly on lap 12 as the leaders caught lapped traffic and neither wanted to give up that top lane as things got crazy in turn 3. Both lost control as Pike was quick to slow his pace.

On the restart, Pike pulled a few car lengths on Duncan with Beemer fending back a hard charging Austin Joplin for position.

As the white flag flew, Duncan was closing ground on Pike as a near photo-finish was ready to happen as Duncan shot to the extreme top lane only to come up a half-car-length short.

Beemer, Joplin and veteran Mike Watson completed the top 5.

Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will be competing next Sunday, Oct. 28, in a special race program with Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points being awarded. Racing will start at 4 p.m. with Late Models, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks also competing in a Project Graduation fundraiser for the Willard High School.
